let’s talk ADHD. i have it. it’s treatable. but it sucks.and there’s a lot of out of date and just depressingly wrong info on how it manifests. i got lucky, got a good specialist, went in having done a bit of my own research.others are getting BS from docs.#adhdreadinglist

going to suggest a few books and links for people getting told that they don’t have ADHD because they’re a woman, because their lives aren’t total messes, because they are burning IQ and talent silently compensating for ADHD.#adhdreadinglist

(these are mostly gonna be Amazon links but should be enough info to find them in your library or elsewhere; please let me know if there's a good open catalog i should be linking to as well)https://a.co/8KIdhx8 Taking Charge of Adult ADHD: Barkley’s published more on adult ADHD than almost anyone else. Great starting point.https://a.co/aPMyQOG Driven to Distraction: good bunch of case studies and coping strategies#adhdreadinglist

these two in particular were real big eye openers for me:https://a.co/7OTlr34 A New Understanding of ADHD in Children and Adults: looking at ADHD from the perspective of it being an executive function disorder that impairs planning, prioritization, and other complex mental processes.https://a.co/9Zzy7sM Smart But Stuck: how ADHD messes with your emotional regulation and how that messes with your life (weird avoidance behaviors, for example).#adhdreadinglist

this one and the next one might hurt to read, tbh. they definitely will not tell you with your diagnosis how much it can affect your relationships.https://a.co/eIBz0Pb Loving Someone with Attention Deficit Disorder: this is the book for identifying bad relationship patterns. It’s written from the perspective of someone who doesn’t have ADHD but it’s useful for understanding why you do things and how it affects your partner, and how they might react.#adhdreadinglist

https://a.co/dy4IMeO The ADHD Effect on Marriage: talks about how ADHD distraction can feel like neglect. I’ve had “Not _meaning_ to hurt someone, however, is not enough.” highlighted as a reminder for some time now. Recommended for anyone in an LTR.#adhdreadinglist

know the diagnostic criteria:https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/diagnosis.html the CDC summarizes the DSM-V criteria for kids. for adults, there’s a short bit at the end starting with “ADHD often lasts into adulthood.” sadly, this is the baseline of knowledge for most docs. https://add.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/adhd-questionnaire-ASRS111.pdf is an adult ADHD self-reporting test. It’s based on the slightly outdated DSM-IV-TR criteria, but is still a useful first-line screener.#adhdreadinglist

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2013/04/adhd-is-different-for-women/381158/ fun twist: even the most recent set of diagnostic criteria are still skewed towards dudes.https://a.co/9pcCzxJ Understanding Women With ADHDabout time!Chapter 2 has a self-assessment form that asks questions better optimized for ADHD presentation in women.got estrogen? surprise: it interacts with both ADHD symptoms and amphetamine response.#adhdreadinglist

https://gekk.info/articles/adhd.html@gravislizard@twitter.com synthesized a bunch of his ADHD tweets into this incredibly real and raw article about what it’s like to live with ADHD. if you read only a few things from this thread, include this.#adhdreadinglist
