@Algot When confronted by one of these combinatorial style puzzles I find my first reaction is to think about how I might write a program to solve it.This time I got the (an?) answer before I had time to properly formulate the problem ...

@ColinTheMathmo Do tell! These puzzles are hand made. I once had a book which discussed the writing of a program to help automate the creation of multiple-word wordsearch puzzles.I read part of it, but was in a phase of NOT writing programs for fun, so gave up on it.If you do come up with a puzzle solver, please share!

@Algot NANARCHY. A system of government run by radical grandmothers.

@Algot I doubt it would be clever or interesting. I was idly considering a dead simple back-tracking, early abort by dictionary lookup, depth-first search. The puzzles are a nice diversion, writing code to solve them would be "a thing", but after dong that, not sure I would then have gained anything useful.

@ColinTheMathmo That's true.Sometimes a programming the solution to a "problem" is merely an academic exercise.

@ColinTheMathmo In the case of this "one-word" puzzle, the effort would far exceed the value.Your solution might be more useful as a way to explore multi-word word search puzzles...especially to ensure a complete answer key, since it might be that the puzzle designer would not recognize ALL the buried words beyond the ones they intended.

@Algot What might be interesting is to encode in one of these grids as many dead ends as possible. Have loads of 5 and 6 letter words, and a unique 7 or 8 letter word. But simply having dead-ends does not necessarily make in interesting puzzle. The question of what *does* make an interesting puzzle is still hotly debated.

@ColinTheMathmo I'm not entirely convinced that these "embroidery" puzzles are good puzzles, but they are easy enough to create that I've taken to them.

@Algot I think they're a nice diversion. Being easy to create is a real bonus.Do you have code to find all possible solutions, and thus to verify uniqueness?

@ColinTheMathmo No.These mostly come off the top of my head. I've had a few with unintended and unexpected double solutions. These are not a job for me, but a pleasant effort, a bit more than a pastime.I appreciate the work of professional puzzle makers, but don't have the desire to be one.

@Algot I can imagine the occasional unexpected extra solution might come as a surprise. Is it unpleasant? Pleasant? Annoying? Uninteresting?Having said that, not sure what I would do with your answer ...

@ColinTheMathmo In the case that an extra valid word does not start with a gray letter, it is a pleasant "aside". It would bother me to overlook a valid answer beginning with one of the marked starter letters.I would consider that a faulty puzzle, one I had inadequately checked before hitting the "toot" button. For what it's worth, aside from the archive I've put on my own web site, the fediverse is the only place these get out to the public.

@aaribaud That is the answer I expected.I wonder if anarchy is considered to be random.

@Algot Depends on who you ask, I'm afraid. And yes, I *am* aware that anarchy is just the absence of higher, pyramidal authority, not the absence of laws. :)
