he can come round here and deal with ours. as long as he doesn't start the same behaviour of ruining the fruit and digging up all the bulbs/seedlings and trying to get in open windows! @Camille

@Camille Hi Camille, Go Reds!. All reds welcome here. How is the little terror able to scare off the grey? Has he been helped by the presence of pine martens?

Its wonderful to see the redser reclaiming. An excellent mataphor for us all. 😊I think the grey looks like a young one and not so big yet. I wish we had reds. @Camille @PennyLope

I have read that that’s the case - red squirrels have some sort of ‘built in’ familiarity with pine martens, as both are native species, which grey squirrels don’t have. But I didn’t know red squirrels were chasing off the grey interlopers!!@Case4XX

@FeartnTired @Camille totally agree - welcome here as long as he's not digging up the bulbs (ALL my tulips last year, ALL of them, dug up and eaten by grey squirrels). I'm happy to share the almonds....

There are very few upsides to gardening on a second floor balcony, but that’s one of ‘em! (Also zero snails & slugs) @grace_hawthorn @FeartnTired

2nd floor, I'll give you, but I have seen snails on the outside wall at first floor level. and the squirrel has been outside the bathroom and bedroom window more than once. @Camille @grace_hawthorn

Well, second floor and no trees for cover on my street 🙁My building is mostly (not smooth) brick on the outside, so they’d want to be pretty determined slugs! @FeartnTired @grace_hawthorn

@Camille No the little red terror is indeed impressive.I live in England where the grey problem is much more obvious. I'm all for culling the greys where necessary but my sister who is big into animal rights calls me a barbarian. May I ask what you think?

I think England needs more pine martens! They seem to have been central to some recovery among the red population in Ireland. @Case4XX

Sorry, replied before looking at the thread - I think that culling is at best a temporary fix if the 'balance' that allowed the grey to become dominant in the first place isn't addressed. @Case4XX
