@maffsie I just checked and it a seems that TB1 was the same as thunderbolt 2 (mini DP). But then again, as long as the different channels are in the right place you could use any connector

@FanOKnives makes sense, wish they'd make up their own connector instead of making everyone guess whether a port and cable will work for TB

@maffsie I don't mind the idea of thunderbolt 3 cables using the USB-C connector, since the TB3 variant has all the same pins + more. I think that the confusion issue comes from companies trying to compete to rip people off as well as a decade or more of deliberate segragation of standards..
