@tejrnz If it were installed on systems by default, `pax` should be amazing. It has a `-x` to set the format, which according to POSIX allows `ustar` for the tar format, and `cpio` for the cpio format. It unifies all the popular archive formats into a single utility.

@tejrnz Oh, it actually seems to be available on my FreeBSD mailserver! :gentoo: doesn’t install it by default, but it is available as app-arch/pax. Perhaps I should add that to my default set, and start using pax more.

@tyil @tejrnz I see pax(1) installed on FreeBSD (12.1; by default?) and on macOS.

@jpmens @tejrnz My mailserver runs FreeBSD 11.0-release-p1, and has it by default from what I can tell.

I tested it for fun on an old tarball .. But I only ever use tar myself .@tyil

@v6shell @tejrnz Seems like the BSDs got their shit together when it comes to POSIX, then. Wonder why GNU+Linux distros seem less interested in having all the standardized tools available.

@tyil @v6shell @tejrnz BSD devs got paid back in the day to do a good job. Linux stuff is mostly glory hunting.

@tA @tejrnz @v6shell Doubt that's accurate for distros like :debian: or :gentoo: ...
