@penguin42 @troubleMoney Considering the diameter of the cable itself, RJ-45 is just the right size already. Not to mention, the connector has a lock, unlike USB-C. I'm sure the question had more urgency back when laptops still shipped with Ethernet connectors, but WiFi made a replacement for RJ-45 moot.

@troubleMoney On the other hand, I just remembered there's lots of laptops where the Ethernet port is semiclosed by default, you push it a bit and cables fit in nicely, that way neither things are compromised.Oh, and I've also just seen USB-A ports that lack the enclosure at the top, ngl that's creative

@penguin42 @pro @troubleMoney Dell still has proper RJ-45 ports on their Latitude laptops, the way they do it is with a folding socket with a spring mechanism to make it smaller when you don't use it.I think I've seen the same kind of mechanism somewhere even for USB-A sockets now, as modern laptops now get so thin they can only fit USB-C ports and expect you to use that for everything.

@arnd @penguin42 @troubleMoney I'm familiar with those folding connectors. They are common on USB Ethernet dongles, and my wife's old VAIO Z had one. Interestingly enough, everything on that laptop is beat up, plastic is cracking all over, one of the battery screws is stripped and stuck in, I had to jam a slice of wood inside to force battery in contact with its connector... but the folding RJ-45 works. The ASUS I'm using to type this is dongle-only.
