People that went to uni: do you still have access to your email address after you graduate? 🤔

@angristan afaik usually no, some institutes allow you to keep it upon request or necessity (say if you published a paper mentioning the address, or in case you know the admins real good..). When I was exmatriculated between bsc and msc I was warned of the access being removed and that I could appeal that if I had reason to keep it.

@angristan Still in uni, but I've heard that mine allows it to be used for up to a year after graduation.

@angristan They closed the 'name@school.edu' account and created a 'name@alumni.school.edu' alias that forwards wherever I set it to. I have used this for student discounts a few times.

@angristan I had several e-mail addresses - it seems that most of them have been shut down, but the main address still forwards to my private inbox.

@angristan Yes, and after a few years I was dropped off of the Uni mailing lists, so it seems like a normal email now. That said, Tech Support won't help you if you let it expire.

@angristan Strongly depends on your university's rules on that. Some of my friends could use their accounts for up to five years after graduating (either MSc and PhD).Speaking for myself: I must have missed the deadline for applying for this :mastoface_with_rolling_eyes:

@angristan yep, in my university the email is a lifetime one...pretty bad choice if you ask me. I'm almost sure that the active directory of my uni is bloated from old users.

@angristan No. Access expires if the password's not renewed before the start of the next semester.

@angristan I do, from the time I took my specialization and Master's degree. There was no online platform and we didn't have an university email when I first took my degree.
