@luke Hey Luke, do you pass your videos through a transcoder before you upload them? That could definitely save you on bandwidth and disk space. I have personally had good experiences using Handbrake, but I think it is just a graphical frontend for ffmpeg and maybe some other tools.

I looked up the gab site you mentioned and it's pretty sad that the actual developers of mastodon leveraged their power to get them defederated. Hell, even app developers banned them. I am a proponent of all free speech, even the kinds that are now considered illegal (that is not to say that I support criminals or, for that matter, that I don't support them - neutrality is the key, especially for a social platform claiming to be representative of large groups of people. I believe everyone can make a moral choice for themselves). And if some "hate far right racist speech" hurts your tender feeling, imho, just get over it.

I believe there are better alternatives than gab out there, some dude made a list of good instances of both Mastodon, Pleroma and Misskey, i don't recall where i found it, but i can remember that he recommended freespeechextremist.com, shitposter.club, kiwifarms.cc and neckbeard.xyz were recommended, so might be worth checking out

You could probably save at least half your bandwidth by uploading in H265. Try running: ffmpeg -i "INPUT_FILE.mp4" -c:v libx265 -crf 28 -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4I reduced the filesize from 87M to 31M on this video after downloading with youtube-dl.

LBRY might be decentralized but the search provider lbry.tv isn't. It's the same with OpenBazaar, if you've heard of it. The network is censorship-free but the main search provider censors drug-related items and they don't appear on the search results. "Mastodon" is crap. I've been with the Fediverse since GNU Social. Mastodon was made by a mega-moron who went to the GNU Social devs saying pretty much "I don't know how to code, but I wish to improve the network. Wanna help me?" He then took the code and made a completely walled garden that only became of note because Zoe Quinn was an early adopter.GNU Social's true successor is Pleroma, which began as a new frontend for GNU Social, replacing the glithy Qvitter. It now is a completely new dameon emulating the old GNU Social network. Masto$hit doesn't even federate right. Gab is another story, Turbo was building his site, built something that was completely broken, took Mastodon because it was in vogue, claimed it was to provide new features, insulted everyone who was already a veteran of the network, and then made their own walled garden. Enter Spinster.Ah, internet drama.

I am quite surprised that you got such bandwidth drain. I must have misunderstood the idea behind Peer tube that videos are supposed to be p2p shared after someone downloads a copy and starts watching it. On the other hand people probably don't hang around for long enough. You probably want to share your usecase with Peer tube devs so that they can come up with some optimizations, i.e. keeping videos that have you as a single peer in memory of browser/local cache of your pc even if you no longer browser that particular video. Or maybe even preloading random pieces of other unseeded videos if you are known to hang around for a long time. At the moment of me writing this comment there are 9 peers seeding which should be good enough not to drain anything from server's BW.

@angel In fairness, OB was designed with the intent of replacing Silk Road etc. in mind. They know what they're doing.What matters is that their client isn't too much of a pain to use (not much, in my experience).

Luke, you need to upgrade to PeerTube 2.3.0 ASAP, it finally has proper federation for search results. Then your users can sty on your instance and watch other instances with your URL. https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube/releases/tag/v2.3.0

@luke Hiven is open source and it hasn't been released cus it's in beta. I hope this Hiven creator guy isn't stupid because the way he kept saying "a new chat platform" in his tweets like it is just a site instead of some type of software and I saw an image while lurking to Twitter that it got a list of home instances whatever it's exactly called in case Hiven happens to go down from an outage. And I'm not sure If that's what the list is for. I never got to see that Hiven went down from a few weeks ago while it's in the works and, sadly it's hosted in Cloudflare.

I see you're using the same host as me. You can also setup Minio and then configure Peertube to use S3 storage, give your Minio a public endpoint behind CloudFlare and 302 to that domain so you can get a free CDN for serving video.
