#introductions a big influx of medical people has just arrived; we could really do with access to things like Lancet/British Medical Journal and our Royal College RSS feeds - can anyone help us get them going? like a newsbot?

* I know we just need an API like ruby or something to publish the rss feed in an account but I am not a coder at all (maybe html ten years ago...I don't understand where I actually enter the code, on mastadon)

@Jopo89 Already on the case. There is a python library for accessing the API. I think it will be easy to duplicate twitter feeds. I’m just not that fast!

@Jopo89 I am not sure what you are looking for. Do you mean abstracts of medical articles? https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govhttps://scholar.google.comhttps://www.base-search.netOr the articles themselves? The latter will in general need a subscription, for many articles there is a free version available, which the browser add-on Unpaywall gives a link to. https://unpaywall.orgNearly all articles are available illegally on Sci-hub.

@VictorVenema sci hub is a pretty fearsome thing! I think we have found a way to do what we want now. Basically breaking news for the lancet and other medical journals so can keep up to date (they have RSS feeds)

@Jopo89 I am working on a new Open Peer review system, so I am gathering related initiatives. Here are two new tools to search literature, which sound promising. I have not used them myself, I am climatologist and they are aimed at medicine, the new king of science. https://www.semanticscholar.orghttp://www.cocites.com

@VictorVenema oo! Yes it seems ridiculous to have a paywall against development. What’s your average hospital somewhere in a field going to do in a LEDC. Climatology is pretty interesting though. I’ll give those sites a go!

@Jopo89 Despite thinking this would be easy it is proving to be much harder than I thought! Progress is slow... I can only get text only tweets to come across from twitter. https://mas.to/web/accounts/168284

@jimothy having a look too! I wonder how the bbc news bots do it. There are ways of just getting RSS feeds I think?

@Jopo89 RSS feeds is one thing but mirroring a twitter feed that isn't your own seems difficult. i've tried deploying these three this evening and I couldn't get any to work properly 😫 https://gitlab.com/mojo42/retoothttps://gitlab.com/ayush-sharma/tweet-toothttps://github.com/cquest/tootbotthishttps://github.com/yogthos/mastodon-botlooks promising but is javascript and would have no idea how to troubleshoot it

@jimothy have you seen this tutorial? In this code a lot of the commands use get_text or tweet_text and maybe you need a command for images?

@Jopo89 Why was there a big influx of new medical people? Did Twitter block someone from that field or something?I witnessed some waves of new people over time, but haven't heard about this new one yet.

@0x11de784a well Twitter is just becoming very inflammatory the past few weeks and I think people have just reached a point it would be nice to have a space that didn’t make you miserable and stressed every day, to chat about the good stuff! So suggested it

@Jopo89 Totally relatable! I thought some event might have been the reason. Like in the past, e.g.:Apr, 2017: First real user boom after release[...]Apr, 2018: FOSTA changes were driving sex workers off of twitterDec, 2018: Tumbler banned NSFW contentJul, 2019: Technically not Mastodon and obviously negative, but neo nazi community Gab migrated to the fediverseNov, 2019: Twitter suspended Indian Spreme Court lawyer's accountI like to keep track of the history of this place 🙂

@0x11de784a I think for us it's covid. Lockdown has made a lot of free time and interest for people to start following doctors, leading to more exposure, more disagreements, more politics....no chill discussion!
