i really really really need to find a new instance before next month when my domain expires! i kinda am no longer that interested in hosting my own single user instance so i want to find a nice comfy instance to move to but i dont know which!basically my requirements are:pleroma and up to datemoderation and rules excluding harrassment, hate speech and other gross stuffcool peopledoesnt follow dumb block recs but blocks instances that dont fit with the rules (eg fsf as its basically a haven for harrassment and hate speech)...and a cool domain name + emojispls tell me any recommendations so i can move asap!

@mewmew i really really really dont want to deal with strangers screaming slurs in my mentions even once more and i wasnt able to escape that until i blocked some instances entirely, because blocking individual users did nothing from stopping more from the same instance coming a little while later....

@pie @dielan honestly even though it's kind of annoying federating with fse is part of my litmus test for whether or not an instance is worth it's salta lot of the ones that don't are run by "block instances without asking or being asked because we're a bunch of control freaks" typesI've accepted I have to live with it (I would have to anyway because I like talking with p) but I get it if you decide to leave fedi again over it

@cantinto @dielan idk i think blocking an instance full of people who come yell slurs and racism at everyone they see in the federated timeline is fair enough, i dont want to see it and im sure many other people dont want to see it and expect an instance with rules against doing that (such as mine) to take action even if the only action to take is defederation

@dielan @ibrokemypie @cantinto why shouldnt the admin be in control? if an instance says it has rules against randomly harassing people then new users should be able to expect if they sign up to that instance, the admin has done everything they can to ensure that wont happenthats the whole reason each instance has its own rules in my view, so users who want to essentially moderate for themselves can do so, and so people who dont want to deal with that garbage done have to

@pieThey can enforce rules without defederating. They can deactivate accounts targeting local users if its a problem, and you can remove from TWKN if you keep seeing spam or cringe from any particular instance. Defederarion is an extreme measure and is way overused today. Over moderated instances tend to have less active communities so I dont think you'll meet your cool people criteria very easy if you dont expect to do any blocking or muting on the account level. If you require the admin do that you might have to keep self hosting. But what's the difference anyway? @cantinto @ibrokemypie

I dont think there's really anything inherently wrong with a domain block when its disclosed. I just think since you can block domains yourself you should focus on your other criteria. I dont think not-blocking an instance is also approval of an instance. The admin may have never had any direct issues coming from the instances you dont like (yet). If its a good instance the admin will respond to your reports and take action to protect you if there's a problem. So dont worry about it and dont think less of an instance based on who they are and aren't blocking.

I have only had one complaint against fse, and the fse account was deactivated on our side.I do the same thing for mastodon.social and other large instances, since they tend to gunk up the federated timeline otherwise, and tend to have understaffed and overworked moderators. If an instance proves to be a recurring problem, they will be defederated with after I attempt to discuss it with the admin of that instance.I enforce the rules I've set and people seem to be pretty happy here.

@pie Would really like to know other instances with similar requirements/attributes, as this list aligns with what I personally view to be setup for an ideal speckle on the fediverse.pleroma.site would mostly fit your standards, but it's been on autopilot on 1.0 since the original founder left a year or so ago, and the new admin is frequently offline/inactive, with rare blips of activity. So some spots of formerly benign, metaphorical rust on the 1996 Mazda 626 are growing again.

The other moderator left the fedi entirely and has stuck to hanging around on Discord and Twitter and IRC now.So yeah, this instance has seen better days...
