Man I wish #Debian :debian: Stable had #Gnome :gnome: 3.36 right now.At least Debian Testing does.

@matt whoa does this mean you're off Fedora?I noticed you don't have your Fedora logo any more next to your name

@EmeraldArcher For now at least. I enjoyed my time with Fedora and for the most part I recommend it, but there are a few annoyances that keep me from *fully* recommending it for day to day purposes.

@matt @EmeraldArcher I'm also interested in your recent distro leaps. It seems you went from Fedora to ElementaryOS to Pop!_OS and back to Debian (equivalent to my personal target distros as well). Will you do some kind of short conclusion post when you're done hopping?

@frankstrater @EmeraldArcher Never landed on Elementary OS because they have yet to rebase to Ubuntu 20.04.Fedora is good but is not *quite* as user friendly as the Ubuntus. It is also somewhat more difficult to install 3rd party software short of compiling it yourself (something i'd like to avoid)Pop!_OS is basically a rethemed Ubuntu without the Ubuntu Snap Store (which has a lot of problems) but instead uses the Elementary AppCenter (which has its own problems).

@frankstrater @EmeraldArcher Debian is basically a "here are the tools, set it up yourself" distro. But if you want the latest and greatest, you need to look elsewhere, or use their testing repos.

@frankstrater @EmeraldArcher I was also doing these distro hops to find something that has a pleasing out-of-the-box experience for my family, so that if they wanted to self administrate, they could with minimal fuss (after an initial setup)The closest I can come to that is to take Ubuntu, uninstall the Snap store and all preinstalled snaps, and install Gnome Software. Then you get the best of all worlds. The reason: PPAs and games. @frankstrater @EmeraldArcher PPAs are how a lot of really good 3rd party software is distributed, like it or not. They will never land in flatpaks, snaps, AppImages, or in the main distro repos. So PPAs are the way to go.Games are also largely targeted toward an Ubuntu base of some sort (not even Debian proper). So if you want games to work right, you gotta be using Ubuntu.

@frankstrater @EmeraldArcher Why not Fedora? A lot of really good software will never land in the Fedora repos (FFMPEG being one of them), and while RPM Fusion is a good alternative, it just doesn't have enough software to match Ubuntu. There is also no equivalent to a PPA. Games are also VERY hit or miss; some games I tried to play just straight up will not work on Fedora. Also the Fedora repos are hecka slow, and Gnome Software doesn't always play nice with them.

@matt actually, using rawhide, copr and obs works around these shortfalls. pure dnf is more sensible than gnome software. but systemd-based systems are easily becoming drm-able. anticipating a period where users are unable to modify installed software. try, for instance, preventing a daemon from shifting vendor-default from inactive||disabled. sysv and debian had been notorious for running a service once installed. systemd is more clandestine about it. @frankstrater @EmeraldArcher

@frankstrater @EmeraldArcher As for Pop!_OS vs Ubuntu proper, I really dislike the default Pop theming; the font choices and color scheme just straight up hurt my eyes to look at. Ubuntu's Yaru theme is MUCH more pleasing to the eyes. But you strip away the theming, and the AppCenter vs Snap Store vs Gnome Software, and some Gnome plugins installed by default, and you are literally left with identical operating systems.

@frankstrater @EmeraldArcher That said, every time I use Ubuntu myself, something "feels" not quite right, but I can't put my finger on it. I dunno.

@matt it has always been too windows-y for me. only thing missing is cryptic error messages. when ubuntu just came out, it was "ubuntu". even nelson mandela endorsed it. it is like good ubuntu died with him. fluendo was a factor in my not touching ubuntu. @frankstrater @EmeraldArcher

@matt @frankstrater @EmeraldArcher https://news.slashdot.org/story/07/01/16/0330207/fluendo-to-sell-proprietary-codecs-for-linux they use deceptive wording. you cannot 'buy' proprietary. you 'lease' proprietary.
