@Jopo89 It's a bit like twitter when i first tried it in 2010 and gave up. Maybe i could upskill on python and set up some bots that duplicate some useful twitter feeds on here. Creating a twitter bot was relatively easy if i could recycle some code off github.

@Jopo89 Just had an idea - we could create a UK medical instance of mastodon and only allow GMC registrees onto it - like doctors.net. Or would this be a massive waste of time/effort/money?

@Jopo89 I can foresee some objections and issues - none of which insurmountable1. 'you're excluding public/nursing/ahp engagement'2. persuading some 'big names' to get a critical mass of buy in will be hard as they get likes/exposure from the public3. would it be international? if yes how to control it - where do you draw the line on who comes in

@jimothy 1) I suppose we could also accept other medical registrations as long as a way of checking? 2) I think a public free space would be welcomed by GMC and others and would make great learning/support for complaints etc and who needs big names initially - twitter won’t last forever and increasingly polarised 3) yes international! As long as some kind of registered number or website credential? Just moderate accounts joining

@Jopo89 Agree with all of the above - maybe need to think through scenarios a little more to forestall any stumbling blocks but in principle I think it could work because a) it's a familiar enough format to twitter for people to make the jump and b) there's nothing stopping them from using both

@jimothy exactly I’m not sure that we need to replace twitter just provide a new space for people to use! With respect to hosting a server other than finances which are fine do we need to hire moderators? We can manage ourselves initially but then if it got busy....

@Jopo89 if it is a truly closed community where there is no anonymity i think reactive moderation by a few volunteer users should be fine. From experience of small online communities in early 2000s (pre social media) the main issue is cliqueyness and the impression there is an in-group and perceived bullying and pile-ons . So need some non-anaesthetists from the beginning!

@TharushaG @jimothy good point! I think due to the way instances can be moderated (a higher ratio of moderators to people), it can be easier to sort out problematic behaviour according to own code of conduct? As each instance has own rules vs twitter where global policy allows much harassment to go unchecked and unmoderated. Other safety features on mastadon like can’t search names etc
