DuckDuckGo burned a truckload of goodwill with me todayTheir DDG-branded web browser for Android has a feature which [it doesn't matter what it does by design], but as a side effect it sends every URL you visited to DuckDuckGo's servers. That is the single worst thing they could do as a "privacy" focused web browser.When this was pointed out to them, they doubled down. For a year. It took an HN front page (in the comments section they doubled down *again*) and 10 hours of arguing with them before the CEO stepped in and agreed to remove the feature.

@sir wow that's a significant find. There's so much dirt on #DuckDuckGo now that I see this as good news -- good news because it serves as more ammunition to get their blindly loyal followers to wake up.

@sir This is inexplicably contrary to their whole shtick about being a privacy company. Did they offer any kind of rationale why they would do something so moronic?

@sir There's no reason to trust any third party by default. Claiming to be good is not enough.

@AtlasFreeman Iv'e heard of some attempts but haven't evaluated them so I can't recommend any outright. I use firefox with a heavily modified about:config + ublock origin

@dsvdv @kungtotte there is not anything better. They're dumb and lame because they ultimately depend on mega-search engines and don't actually tackle any of the interesting and important problems in making a better search engine

@sir @stevefoerster This is nuts. We've been finding favicons just fine for, what, 25 years now? How on Earth does this seem acceptable? It seems more and more like the only decent browser is lynx.While I'm in this thread, does anyone have a good alternative to DDG for search engines? I've yet to find a searx instance that isn't abysmal, but I'm more than happy to try them.

@sir @kungtotte @dsvdv #DuckDuckGo *is* a metasearch engine (sources from #Microsoft Bing and #Yahoo)

@sir Nitpick: they are only sending domains, not full URLs(but I agree that's bad, and their initial responses are indeed awful)

@sir I was sceptical the fist time with duckduckgo, when local advertisment shields in the double size of a truck popped up here. It requires a large amount of funds to put them up and they seem to have popped up in many other counties. There has to be made large sums made to finance this. The rule: "If you don't pay for a service, you're the product" seems to apply here
