Apparently, the FOSS community has problems with racism/sexism. Anybody heard more about this/could elaborate?

@anacrypto as far as i know, this is partially true. for instance, this thread by @GinnyMcQueen https://kitty.town/@GinnyMcQueen/104320285664556973 describes an example with peertube. On the other hand, there are also some projects who actively fight against it. For instance, my impression is that @phessler and @pamela do a good moderation job on bsd.network to remove in general ugly behavior. And from some conferences(for instance the chaos communication congress), i know that sexist behavior is noticeable (for instance, i've read that people had touched the latex outfit at a party there without asking first). I know that the chaos communication congress has also a awareness team who addresses that. However, i don't know how severe this issue is.Also, i know that in germany, for instance, there are feminist/female hackerspaces. I think a talk on the chaos communication congress was given, maybe i find that later. However, i have found: https://modelviewculture.com/pieces/the-rise-of-feminist-hackerspaces-and-how-to-make-your-ownI also remember that @Blue1337Blood once described/responed to a sexist joke which was something on the lines of "how does a java programmer undresses his girlfriend? he calls the Object.toString() method". As far as i remember the person posting that didn't notice this was sexist and @Blue1337Blood started a really great explanation of why its bad. Also there is, for instance @IT_Kollektiv which i include here, because they once did a presentation on the chaos communication congress on their collective company, and in general, i'd consider them kinda part of FOSS community. i think their members do also FOSS things in their freetime.First, they obviously fight against that in a political way, they consider themselves, as far as i understood, to be political activists. Second, they especially highlight to be pleased to hear from female socialized people, and i think the reason is to try to get more women into IT, to increase diversity in IT - which in turn probably also increases diversity in FOSS.cc'ing some people: @HackyScientress @Gina @reticuleena

@fruechtchen @pamela @phessler @Blue1337Blood @HackyScientress @reticuleena @GinnyMcQueen @anacrypto @IT_Kollektiv Hey tnx for tagging me! :) My personal experience with the #FOSS community is very positive. The @fosstodon community feels very inclusive (thanks @kev and @mike !). I'm active on a few forums and participated in IRL FOSS events, and have always felt welcome and treated with respect. Sure I've also had awkward comments, but nothing malicious.

@fruechtchen @pamela @phessler @Blue1337Blood @HackyScientress @reticuleena @GinnyMcQueen @anacrypto @IT_Kollektiv What's important to note is that I'm experiencing this a white woman in a predominantly white field who very much 'fits her gender.' It may very well be that others' experiences in the same communities differ, so please take this into account. Also thanks for tagging the other folks in your toot, always great to find new people to follow!

@Gina @fruechtchen @pamela @phessler @Blue1337Blood @HackyScientress @reticuleena @GinnyMcQueen @IT_Kollektiv @fosstodon @kev @mike Thank you people for the replies!! I'm new to this world and there are a lot of beautiful things happening, but it is important that every space (and especially the supposedly more radical ones) is reflective and careful we don't reproduce existing inequalities/oppression in these spaces. Glad to learn more about this through your replies :)

@Gina @fruechtchen @pamela @phessler @Blue1337Blood @HackyScientress @GinnyMcQueen @anacrypto @IT_KollektivIn my experience (also a cis-white) the FLOSS-Community is still a little more male-dominated than other nerd/tech groups. It does not mean, that they are more sexist. But there is la little more of the kind of sexism where nice people do sexist stuff due to unawarenes. But most of the FLOSS guys I know are quite sensitive and open to the subject.
