@paul Debian is the "stable" Linux distro, at least for those who can't stomach RedHat (and I don't blame them). Alpine Linux is similarly stable but much simpler and more reliable

@sir regarding desktops, servers or containers? I see your point for the later, *maybe* even as a full server, but I'd argue it does not make a good desktop, no?

@sir Debian offers a different packaging guarantee. You can always build a Debian package from source offline (if you acquire all of its dependencies), the same is not true for Alpine Linux.

@JayVii_de @sir I used to, as well. It's a fantastic desktop experience. 'apk' is really fast. I don't get why "bUt aLpiNe iS fOr cOnTaInErS" is memed so much. It's literally just another Linux distribution, with a plentiful package repository.

@bfiedler @sir Huh? You can, but why is this an Alpine-specific gripe? "Download the source and build (if you have all the deps)" can be done on all Linux systems.

@x @sir Bad phrasing on my part: The source packages on Debian explictly include all original sources - the aports repository holds (mostly) only a URL and a hash, which isn't guaranteed to be available at any point in time.

@sir sounds kind of like the early days of voidlinux (also regarding musl), which is cool but time-consuming. I am open to trying it on a desktop (and probably would have already, if I had the time right now). Thanks

@kkremitzki @bfiedler lol this is dumb. The inability to keep packages forever fucks up docker? Give me a fucking break. This is how you get ancient security vulnerabilities in your software. It's GOOD that alpine doesn't support this, and anyone who wants it can fuck off

@sir @bfiedler Reproducible builds don't necessarily have anything to do with docker, that's just the example given in the issue. The problem is "makes apk non-deterministic" and it seems reasonable to me to not prefer that sort of thing?

@sir @paul If you're using Debian only because it's stable, sure. But there are other features and reasons to use Debian, and I doubt Alpine satisfies all of them. You may call some of them bloat. Other people may find them comfy. And that's fine.
