@Gina aio liquid cooling is no harder to install than an air cooler. It's just a cpu block and a radiator with pipes connecting the two.Your RAM has the frequency 2666 (actually no, but we'll skip that for now) while your CPU supports up to 3200.

@Gina @newt cooling shouldn't be an issue, but he is right that you should get two sticks instead of one, and be careful to put them in the right spots to use the dual memory channels. And with Ryzen you should be getting faster RAM, 2666 is going to slow things down a bit since Ryzen really needs fast RAM to shine

@Gina The boxed one with the Ryzen 5 is fine, but could be too less for the 9.Also I'd use 2 x 16 GB RAM instead of 1 X32 GB, this makes for a little bit more throughput there. All in all, good choices. :D

@Gina Go to the ASUS website, look up the support page for that motherboard. They should have a PDF of RAM combinations and the end speed you get. Stated RAM speed isn't always a good guide to what's the faster RAM combination on the board. @Matter @newt

@Gina I have one of the previous generation and the stock cooler is enought for what I've tested. I would recommend that your case has good air flows and if you can add fans (some cases have the slot but not the fan) buy them.

@GinaI have ended up with 2x16 gb ecc ram from kingston @2400 as ecc ram is not sold faster as the spec of ddr4 is only rated up to 2666mhz. Thos as o inderstamd it it abosulutly recomended to get fast ram. I only use thos kit as i got it fpr free. Ecc is kinda pointless on my system. @Matter @newt

@Gina i built a ryzen 5 system and the stock cooler was insufficient. The All in One liquid coolers out there are not cheap but not wildly expensive. I was running up to 90c and now i stay in closer to 60-70, id recommend getting a cooler and some thermal paste. πŸ˜ƒ good luck it looks fun!

@Gina The one that comes with the CPU should be fine. If you later conclude it's too noisy, I absolutely love Noctua coolers. My PCs are completely quiet, unless I do f.e. video conversion where the CPU is at 100% constantly for a long(er) period. Then I can hear them if the rest of my room is completely quiet, but it's still not loud or annoying. I always use/configure PWM so the fan speed only increases when needed.

@Gina And yes, I agree with posters mentioning faster RAM. My first gen threadripper scales more-than-linear with faster ram, and I think modern Ryzen's are even more speed-hungry when it comes to ram. At least ddr4-3200 with lowish CAS should be good.

@Gina I originally upgraded to twin 1660's as it fit my model requiring the ability to get more cores for hashcracking... it is a pretty significant upgrade, but if you are not gaming, hashcracking, or requiring Tensor cores... you may not notice a huge difference... the 1060 was a great general performer as well.

Jeeeesus I just did a basic comparison of these features with the MacBook Pro (2019). Assuming that comparing the AMD Ryzen 9 3900x with the Intel i9 (??) CPU, and keeping all other specs sort of the same, the MacBook Pro costs about double the price of this build.

@Gina Not fair at all. The MacBook Pro i9 processor is a laptop class CPU, where I believe you got desktop class - much more powerful.

@edebill Yeah and there's something to say for the extremely thin and portable design of a macbook. I just passionately hate the Apple OS, so it wouldn't ever be an option for me.

@Gina I'm pretty solidly in the Mac camp, but there's always the temptation to build a really powerful desktop and run Linux on it just because that would be really fun.

@Gina Mac fans will often stand by their purchases, as is the nature of consumerism. We want to justify the expenses that we feel proud of. Bottom line: Mac has always been over-priced, well marketed and unremarkable. They've had a few of "firsts" (compact home desktop, iPod, iPhone), so I'll give them that, even though similar things already existed and just weren't as popular. Their hardware has only gotten more restrictive/proprietary over the years.

@Gina add to that, in 5 or so years you will no longer be able to upgrade the OS because the hardware won't be supported:(Manufactured obsolescence at it's best.

@trevdev @Gina I would add that Mac has also made some great contributions to UX/UI; even if they've let that go to their head and allowed some poor UX/UI decisions to be made (long live the 3.5mm jack!)

@Gina @trevdev I was a Mac user while in University for audio engineering (Macbook pros were included in tuition). There was definitely a learning curve switching from Windows/Linux but I did end up enjoying the user experience eventually. You just have to accept their hardware as an extension of the software. That's why their walled garden is so strong, unfortunately.

@Gina ok, you don’t have a best-in-class Retina display in the price list for your desktop, which might bring down the difference a bit... for the rest: it’s the Apple Tax. Especially the upgrade prices for the soldered RAM and SSD are way off and might take up the remaining difference.

@FreePietje @Gina a word of warning- if you’re going for the v large 15-size Noctua air cooler (ISTR there are 13 and 15-sized models) consider getting low profile RAM as otherwise you can have problems fitting the cooler and the RAM.
