       People watch hackers and make fun of it, but that really kind of was my friends in 95-97.It wasn’t far off at all.

       @thegibson I confess I feel I would've been a Joey...a bit too nerdy and just a bit out of my depth 😂

       @msh I know who my joeys were, and honestly, just like in the movie, the were the best skilled... the rest of us were good, and knew how to look cool. But they just jacked in and got it the fuck done.I think any of us could go Joey, but there were always a couple who were always Joey.

       @msh @thegibson Heh, I was the Joey. The younger one that just kinda hung out while the others were on Cleveland Freenet.

       @thegibson Meanwhile I'm sitting here thinking how utterly fictional it seemed to have two hacker types in the same room and not have it smell of a professional conference. Got "banned" from using the school computers for bypassing their "security" though. They gave up when I came up with a floppy disk that could boot a PowerPC.

       @socketwench yeah, that is true for the past 15 yrs. or so.I was in denial in HS. I was doing my shit on the side, but not even my closest friends knew what I was getting into, even the two who were into it too. I tried to play dumb with them often, and it worked.

       @thegibson @socketwench @drwho You guys were so lucky. I didn't have a single IRL hacker friend or place to go. It was all stuff I was doing on the school computers, not knowing what I was doing, in retrospect damn that shenanigans could have gotten me in so much trouble, if I'd looked the part -- instead of some dumb innocent beach rat type that everyone kinda looked past.I guess there's a benefit to looking clueless and innocent. I think I am sort of a perma-Joey.
