Learning a new keyboard layout is hard, especially when you keep tweaking things so it's more comfortable :blobsad:

I also find myself actively avoiding cli tasks because they're significantly more difficult when my best friend (the keyboard) is a complete stranger

@amolithBut practice makes perfect. I think it took me 2 years to get at the same speed when I switched to Dvorak. Now I can blindly switch between Dvorak and qwerty. Using multiple machines and different keyboards helps :)

@sexybiggetje Two years is a long time. How do you like Dvorak? It's the base for what I have now

@amolith Feel you. Today I realized that my typing style is ugly, so I am trying to learn the 10 fingertips style. But I am so slow now. Ok a complete different layout is a bigger challenge, but I lost 2/3 of my speed too...

@amolithIt's better for my fingers ;). Learning Dvorak was 2 days. Getting speed and typing blind took the majority of those 2 years.

@amolith When I was learning Dvorak (with dvorak7min) it took me about 15 minutes per day for a month. After that time, it was no problem to switch, in fact.Spoiler: Do not user-define vim shortcuts! It is perfectly ok to work with vim with Dvorak layout!

@amolith Don't do that! Learn at least all the letters in new layout first. In my case I felt exactly when it's time to switch. I used qwerty until the time came.

@qeef Heh I read the same thing somewhere else too so I haven't touched Vim's bindings (or anything else based on them)

@amolith I researches that too. I read somewhere something like "First, test it without bindings. If it fail, create bindings." but ot dosn't fail in my case. I am perfectly ok with Dvorak and basic vim shortcuts :) I even forgot the qwerty ones. (Which is ok for me anyway.)

@qeef Other than adding some mouse keys, I think this is the layout I'll stick with. The main thing I changed was switching L and R because ls was a massive pain and I didn't want to add aliases everywhere to make it more comfortable.Rather than still using qwerty, I decided to just stick with Dvorak for now; there's been a drastic improvement over the last couple of days. I do keep my other keyboard off to the side for passwords though lol

@amolith @sexybiggetje I'd thought about trying Dvorak, but I type fast with all 10 fingers, and didn't figure it was worth it.

@amolith I don't think it make sense to switch `l` and `r` just because of `ls` commands, because you type ` -` or <enter> after `ls` anyway. Also, in my case, I hesistated with switching to Dvorak and I was patient, just because I didn't want to decrease my typing performance significantly. However, this is just my opinion! Keep your direction!

@amolith if it’s a programmable keyboard what I like to do is to make it look as similar as possible as the previous layout I was used to and just change a few keys … get used to those and then change some new ones … it takes time but it makes me come back to my new keyboard over and over again instead of avoiding it
