@shpuld @moonman very possible, mmmkind of a different situation, though, since slave ownership was not practised by most citizens. site A says even in the most common state, mississippi, it was a minority of 49%, 32% for "the south" on average. other site says 10% of confederate soldiers, 20% citizens, and 36% soldiers either owning or living with a family member who did. dunno what's true, but these appear to be "try to paint as many as possible as complicit and bad" places, sostrong cultural influence / peer-pressure, but not nearly so strong as meat-eating todayand it's also (would hope) easier to care for and recognise as valuable another human who has the same features / emotions / can respond to you in language

@shmibs @moonman it was still normal practice back then and wasn't seen as wrong until it was abolished (and abolished first in america as well, something people seem to forget about). it'd also be good to know how these people treated their slaves, that would actually allow you to make a better moral judgement

@shpuld @moonman not making moral judgements here. the people involved are all dead, so ┐('～`；)┌does seem likely to me, that similar thoughts will be had about meat-eating people of today. kind of a neutral thing, though, unless someone actually lives that long to experience mistreatment for it

@shpuld not sure about this, but I feel if we hadn't dragged our feet so much with the confederate generals the statue purge wouldn't have expanded so much. There was a time when we could have drawn a bright line, these are bad, they're coming down, and that's it. The longer it goes on, the more people question what else should come down.I guess some people see it as, we need to stop them before the slippery slope consumes us all. But another viewpoint would be, don't sit on the sidelines and watch discontent grow. The people who'd like a confederates bad Columbus good compromise never really voiced much support for removing confederate statues in the past.(Six paragraphs examining epistemological certainty elided.)
