i dont think you should start hrt until you've done plenty of research on the pharmacokinetics, effects, side effects, different medications, their effects/differences, basic endocrinology, and morehrt is not a toy and is a life long commitment, and though you can avoid health risks, you can't avoid them if you don't know much about how it works or what you're doing. a 15 minute informed consent chat with an endocrinologist is not enough information.do. your. research.

@nik 15 minutes is enough to cover the effects of hightened e and lowered tworrying about all the different medications and side effects and health is the job of the endo, supposedly. Yeah, they can get it wrong but you shouldnt be required to do their job twice to check for them.this is mostly a DIY-driven perspective which ends up being exclusionary

@steph it's not a DIY-driven perspective it's a most-doctors-and-prescribing-endos-don't-know-shit perspective. sure if you're seeing someone like dr powers you don't need to worry at all, but from what ive seen the vast majority of docs/endos that prescribe hrt, though they may have individual experience with the drugs in question for other uses, don't know much about what they're doing.

@steph @nik +1 this, honestlythe fundamental information about HRT you need to know is "hey this is actual medication that does things other than just what we're using it to do, here's a list of side effects and things you need to be aware of" and "basically the point of this is to bring your hormone levels to that of a cis person of the gender you're wanting to transition to"

@nik yeah, I can see that perspective. I'd encourage people strongly to learn about HRT and not trust their doctors entirely. I wouldn't say you *need to do it* to start HRT though cause its not like everyone can just do that

@pea @steph delaying for a month is basically nothing in the grand scheme of things, and not being educated is more damaging than waiting a month -- someone i know (who was not told about the side effects of spiro) got horrible spiro brain fog and thought it was because of hrt in general and dropped it for a really long time because they became afraid of it.

@nik @steph once again, your endo failed youliterally speaking, informed consent, as you just noted, requires covering side effects explicitlythe failure of a doctor does not mean it's every patient's responsibility to do their doctor's job, it means you need to get a new doctor

@nik ultimately the effective message of your post is that hrt has serious side effect risks, where in reality the risks are fairly low compared to other commonly prescribed medication.

@steph the risks are fairly low when compared to other medications over the same time period, but most people dont take those medications for the rest of their lives

@pea @nik though if most doctors are this incompetent there definitely should be messaging on the trans community on how to recognise this. If you don't know, you can't tell you have a bad endo. I'm not sure it needs to be "a month", but having a resource out there covering side effects which can be read in an hour would be very useful. Especially if it converted how to spot a bad endo.

@nik @steph sure, I agree with that. it sucks. people also can't know if their house's foundation was built correctly, but we put it out of mind and trust that they are because we can't be actively concerned about everything in our livesI'm sorry your endo failed you but unless you're telling me it's the common case for trans people, it's not reasoning that every trans person needs to take time out of their life and their transition to do this

@steph @nik I don't think there's anything wrong with encouraging self education. *especially* if your endo isn't a specialist in trans health. i've had enough experience with ignorant doctors that I can't recommend trusting them blindly.if you can't self educate for whatever reason, make sure you have a reason to trust your endo and don't do so blindly. ideally you can have an intelligent discussion about your HRT regimen with an experienced specialist, but at the very least you need to read the relevant literature if your endo doesn't care to.
