I've been fairly active with blocking people who don't seem to get this but sometimes stuff still slips through the cracks and god dammit it's getting really exhausting to deal withI keep seeing the argument that "black people shouldn't have to CW things related to their experience as black people" and like. No. That's not how it works. I'm not saying that blackness needs a CW. If some people are, which doesn't match my experience but of course it wouldn't because I'm white, then they're absolutely being assholes and they have no place in a community that seeks to be welcoming to black people. What I AM saying is that discussion of current events needs a CW. Yes, the current Black Lives Matter movement is obviously about black people, but it's not THAT that makes it need a CW. People have been asking for CWs for Covid-19 related stuff too. It's the fact that they're current events, everyone is talking about them (which is a fantastic thing!!!), and this makes life difficult for some people. The key point here is that CWing your current events does NOT limit your message. It doesn't make less people see it. People who are ignoring these topics will continue to do so. The only thing it does is screw over people with mental illnesses who can't handle this without mental preparation. Good job, you reached exactly 0 extra people and you gave someone an anxiety attack. Hope you're proud of yourself.CWs are an accessibility tool, not a silencing tool. If people are asking for CWs, that's not censorship, that's like them saying "Hey, if you take two seconds to do this extra thing I can engage with this and spread the message around too". And if you insist that these people can just mute you and use keyword filters, again, congratulations, you've just REDUCED the number of people that will see your message. As a final note, to all those who are righteously angry and aggressively pushing for change without shoving your mentally ill friends under the bus: thank you. You're all awesome, your efforts are working, and I hope this movement will keep pushing forward with people like you.
