Still packing and getting ready to move to Jersey City. (Signed a lease before the shit hit the fan, actually.)I've got lots of original hollywood/mafiaa DVDs and for years I've been thinking about mass-converting them to files on a hard drive. Wow, what a rabbit hole!Right now I'm thinking vp9 video codec in mkv containers, but the questions of how best to auto-detect and set encoder settings for removing 3:2 pulldown and interlacing still look murky.Bed time. Bad advice is welcome.

@progo If it's for then getting rid of them I'd be tempted to just ISO them.Or to save a little space, use MakeMKV to remux them into mkv without unwanted menus etc.Way quicker than transcoding, and lossless. The one drawback is this takes more space than transcoding and compressing the video.

@benYeah that's definitely an option. Not sure if I'll dump the originals, but if when I've gathered them all they fit on one hard drive of some reasonable size, converting without transcoding sure will be a lot faster.

@benThe purpose of the media shift project is to make all these videos on DVDs that I have work with a Fire stick, tablets, and laptops and without sifting through piles of discs at playback time.

@progo Ah yeah then in that case I guess I'd go x264 with AC-3 audio maybe.I only use one video player now that does everything, but when I was trying to use Consoles, tablets etc I always ended up going back to plex. There's always one f****ing device that doesn't play whatever format you need it to. But most devices tend to have plex.

@progo I’ve encoded a lot of stuff myself. I use ripit to get an image and then I use handbrake to encode subtitles, alternate audio tracks and insert chapters into my ripped DVDs files. It’s all apple format but I got a sizable library. I have a lot of backups and the DVDs but I’m thinking of downsize a bunch of crap.

@progo ripit will encode, but I prefer making my media Rips resemble the original DVDs as much as possible.

@SabexNo ps4s or xboxen here. I'm buying a msm tv stick probably, with an eye for "it will play anything over an appropriate local file sharing service" or a tv stick plus a separate tiny general purpose computer running a Linux tv player. Other device include a recent Fire Android tablet and recent iPad. It seems to me vp9 or h.265 should work fine on all those at low resolution.@ben

@Synclair @progo No, I've never. I was always too poor for a Bluray player for PC. I have some Blurays but I play them on my PS4.

@Sabex @progo I like the image quality but the files are huge so I’d only do my most fave Blu-ray Discs

@SynclairBought my first bluray drive only a year ago and some blank discs for archiving h.264 camcorder source files from live event recordings. Haven't actually used it yet. Buying bluray video and ripping? No thanks, I'll wait a while.@Sabex

@Synclair @SabexAlso, 480p ought to be enough for anyone. :^bMy living room TV is 30 inches and I'll never buy a bigger display for watching television.
