Confessions: I still don't understand the concept behind a mailing list :ac_bewildered:

@yarmoAgreed I cannot fathom why some groups still stick to mailing lists when there's so many better options

@jambamkin Now I actually don't know how it works! It's like a forum but all replies are sent to each member via email?

@hund @jambamkin but then, the admin behind the scenes when two people reply to the same email 🤔 also, can you have topics or subdiscussions?

@yarmo @jambamkin You have categories, like Gentoo have:* gentoo-user* gentoo-dev* gentoo-announceAll new email messages are considered new topics.

@yarmo At coffee-general@folgers.com we secretly replaced this unsuspecting user's "Reply" button with "Reply all"... let's see if they notice the difference.

@yarmo You can think of it like discussion threads on Reddit. If two people reply to the same message, those messages are both children of the same parent message. The tree grows as people respond to different messages. It helps if you have a mail client which can display threads like Neomutt does (See img).It also helps one follow the discussion when people quote the relevant parts of the message they are responding instead of top-posting. @hund @jambamkin
