So... I have a question... I think. I dunno quite how to put it, though, so here goes. Premise 1: Protests are scaryPremise 2: communication makes protests less scaryPremise 3: centralized networks are massive weak spotsConclusion: distributed networks to aid in communication. Okay. So, here's my question: does any know of any apps that are free and open source that allow for the creation of ad hoc networks for communication within events such as protests, or for broader use? I know firechat is a thing, and that's kinda what I have in mind, but it's closed source as far as I know

@violetkey matrix and riot but starting a server takes knowledge that not everyone might have.

@Lexilaughs I was hoping for something that didn't use a server, or any of the existing internet infrastructure. Something that would build a network out devices present and route messages between them securely. a MANET

@violetkey found quite a few of these actually but there are none that I’ve found that are open source and available for iOS and Android.

@Lexilaughs Found one! https://briarproject.org/ Wasn't especially looking for it when I happened across this, seems to be pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Well, from a communication standpoint, at least. Ideally, there'd be an app to create a MANET then allow for HTTP(S) to work over that MANET so comm apps just worked. But... that's a bit of a pipe dream and this seems good enough

@violetkey ah yeah I saw that but it doesn’t have an iOS version which is something I was looking out for. Ideally one of these apps would be available on both platforms since they both have large install bases. Yah I agree it would be nice if they could handle https traffic, that would be a pro to bringing mesh net equipment to protests, it would then be possible to provide decentralized digital infrastructure for intel on the area, like maps etc.
