@LocsVegan Karen is used by white men to denigrate white women. We are fucking sick of it.https://spinster.xyz/@Ladyfat/posts/104234215877915383

I think the use of “Karen” is the equivalent to the use of “Sapphire”. Regardless of their origin, both names are used to silence and mock women. They are used as a way to elevate the interests of men and to divide women. Divide and conquer.@AnneBevan @LocsVegan

Sapphire was the name of a character from the Amos and Andy show of the 1930’s. “The Sapphire Caricature portrays black women as rude, loud, malicious, stubborn, and overbearing. This is the Angry Black Woman (ABW) popularized in the cinema and on television. She is tart-tongued and emasculating, one hand on a hip and the other pointing and jabbing (or arms akimbo), violently and rhythmically rocking her head, mocking African American men for offenses ranging from being unemployed to sexually pursuing white women. She is a shrill nagger with irrational states of anger and indignation and is often mean-spirited and abusive. Although African American men are her primary targets, she has venom for anyone who insults or disrespects her. The Sapphire's desire to dominate and her hyper-sensitivity to injustices make her a perpetual complainer, but she does not criticize to improve things; rather, she criticizes because she is unendingly bitter and wishes that unhappiness on others. The Sapphire Caricature is a harsh portrayal of African American women, but it is more than that; it is a social control mechanism that is employed to punish black women who violate the societal norms that encourage them to be passive, servile, non-threatening, and unseen.”https://www.ferris.edu/HTMLS/news/jimcrow/antiblack/sapphire.htmThe parallels between “Sapphire” and “Karen” are fairly obvious. How can a feminist be ok with either black or white women being treated this way?@AnneBevan @LocsVegan

@Karu @AnneBevan "Karen" still isn't in any way comparable to any name given to black people as an insult. Biggest difference is, white people stereotyped black people based on their racist ideas about black people. Karen, on the other hand, was a result of observed behavior of certain white women. Not the same in any way, not even a slur, not divisive of women. It's about a specific type of white woman. 🤷

@LocsVegan @Karu Karen is used to insult uppity white women. And an uppity woman is anyone who returns faulty goods or fails to smile and be nice.

@AnneBevan @Karu. Not so much uppity but annoying, mean or egotistic. Or classist or racist. Or hypocritical. Also depends on age, because a young white woman who's an asshat would be called a Becky, while older is usually Susan or Sharon and the really old ones might be called a Maude or Mabel or some other 'old lady' name. If she's a white supremacist/redneck type she might be called a 'hick' name like a Betty May or Bobbie Sue. If she has delusions of grandeur or makes false claims she is usually called Jan (like "Sure, Jan." in reference to The Brady Bunch) Also depends on the region and economic level, and this is why people laugh at the claim that 'Karen' is a slur because really any name can be substituted and there are numerous male equivalents for irritating white guys.

@Hildegarde_de_Bingen @LocsVegan @Karu Don't think I've heard white women referring to white men who've annoyed them personally as "Bubba" or "Billy Bob".

Lots of southern men are called bubba, but that is because it is baby talk for "brother". I call my own little brother bubba sometimes. I can imagine people referring southern men as "bubba' in a classist kind of way, though. Like they think all the people in the south are straight out of Deliverance. There's really no "Karen" equivalent for men. No one is saying that Bubbas just need a cock in their mouth. I do know that there are plenty of white women who are assholes and fit the Karen stereotype, but the way the woke white boys are using it is just any white woman who stands up for herself. I bet they even call black women Karen for standing up for themselves. They have found another socially acceptable way to express their hatred for women. They can call us TERFs, and they can call us Karens, while hoping we're punched or raped and they all slap each other on the back because it's so fucking hilarious. Just a few days ago I watched a video on Twitter about a "Karen". She was probably about my age, and she was complaining about not being able to see or hug her friends or family, not able to hold other people's babies, she complained about wearing masks, etc. Just normal kinds of complaints. Of course her being upset about all this (and daring to say anything) means she's a Karen. The whole Karen meme is overplayed now. If any women who is upset about anything is Karen, then we're all Karen. Anyway, I was worried about even getting in this discussion because I don't want to make anyone mad. I thought about it all day. @Hildegarde_de_Bingen @AnneBevan @LocsVegan @Karu
