Michael Moore's documentary "Planet of the Humans" removed from YouTube.https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/may/26/michael-moore-film-planet-of-the-humans-removed-from-youtubeThe artist Toby Smith, claiming his material was used in the documentary without permission:“I went directly to YouTube rather than approaching the filmmakers because I wasn’t interested in negotiation. I don’t support the documentary, I don’t agree with its message and I don’t like the misleading use of facts in its narrative.”

@ebo I don't accept to agree with or like this documentary. I believe the energy transition is necessary and doing it sooner is worth it.

@ebo I don't accept to agree with or like this documentary. I believe the energy transition is necessary and doing it sooner is worth it. But I agree this looks like censorship. It sure proves that it doesn't only happen to small, leftist YouTubers.

@mplammers I'm watching but yes I know Moore to be controversial but he always has a point. I don't care I think information should be free. Youtube and copyright sucks.

With regards to the documentary itself, I agree that the biomass narrative cannot hide that wood-to-energy is a global threat to forests. It also shows some shocking examples of large scale green washing, often subsidized. But it also criticizes wind, solar and batteries, which I think are essential to a renewable future.

@mplammers for all the criticism about the movie being out of date, its core argument is still true today: there's no good technical solution to intermittency. There's no form of energy storage available or even conceivable today that can store energy in the enormous volumes necessary.Try to store everything in batteries, for example, we quickly run into global limits. We'd need more minerals than there are known reserves worldwide. The tech hasn't been invented yet.

@michiel "awareness alone can begin to create the transformation" I think this quote from the doc is the core argument. Your summary is more fatalistic, for which I cannot blame you.Since batteries are mostly carbon, I think that may even be fine. Few better places for carbon than in a battery currently. The idea that there would be one silver bullet technical solution to energy problems like intermittency is indeed incorrect. But that doesn't mean it's impossible when we use everything.

@mplammers that would be nice, but batteries are mostly metal. The most realistic option I've seen is to use solar energy to produce H2 (30% efficiency), store it or pump it around, then burn it or convert it back to electricity (again, losses). There's no practical limit to how much H2 we can produce and store. On the other hand, to use this, you should produce three times more solar power than you actually need.

@michiel Whatever the solution is, I'm pretty sure it doesn't involve burning forests to produce electricity.
