@vik I use Antennapod for podcasts. I like it quite a bit.

@vik I have used https://f-droid.org/en/packages/de.danoeh.antennapod/ and https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.einmalfel.podlisten/ ; I cannot say they were good experiences mainly because I tend to subscribe to 'selkosuomeksi uutiset' (news in simple Finnish) and then ... not listen for several months. So basically, antennapod will download _if_ you ask it to, but it does not nag you about it (something I probably should have.)Some of this may also be due to the very odd nature of the selkosuomeksi uutiset podcast feed, which used to be very hidden on the yle website. You can now find it with various things (like searching apple's podcast thing...)Nonetheless, the source is there.(I actually would likely prefer, now, to get the podcasts locally, then synch them to the android device, rather than doing it from android... )

@takeonrules I had a look at Antennapod and couldn't figure out how to get it to play a directory full of MP3 podcasts I'd already downloaded. Am I missing something?

@vik Hmm…I haven't went down that path. I subscribe to podcast feeds and download via Antennapod; I didn't bring a catalogue of MP3s with me.The FAQ looks like you can download via a few protocols OR use an SD card for storage (don't know what that would look like on discovering those files).https://antennapod.org/faq.htmlPerhaps there's something there, but it may require some hacking. Or asking the mailing list.

@vikIf you are looking for podcast software: I'd recommend AntennaPod, a podcatcher/player. If you are looking for some more generic media player: The Android port of VLC works really good.

@themightyglider I'm looking for something that'll play MP3s in date order. Phone's built-in "Music" player won't recognise all MP3s and add them to a playlist - though it will play them if you point it at them via the file manager. However, it makes its own order up, the algorithm for which is not immediately obvious or readily configurable for default.

@vik if you want a #podcast manager/player then #antennapod is The One. It's not a mp3 player thoughif you want a mp3 player then you have lots of simple players available and more feature loaded like #vlc it may be that you have already downloaded all that episodes and don't want to download them again, so play them with any player you want and start managing your podcast sources and new episodes with antennapod.

@vikMaybe I have an idea how this could be done. But it would include termux(app) and some scripting. I guess there are more simple ways.

@vikIt's one of the coolest apps for Android imho. Gives you all the power of a Unix shell for your pocket, without any voodoo like rooting your device.
