The only person I've known who knew the stock market told me this: it's always the wrong time to sell, and it's always the wrong time to buy. But there are degrees of how right and wrong it is, degrees that you get to know well after it's too late to do anything about it. So you invest - to the penny - exactly as much as you can stand to never see again starting immediately.:jrbd: 💸 📊

To clarify: invest - to the penny - exactly as much as you can stand to never see again starting immediately after you invest it.

@onan reminds me a little of the advice given to new players in Eve:Online - "never undock from the station in a ship you can't afford to lose."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfNR--ARymoESRB Rating: violence? the most violent thing about this video is that you realise the Amarr ships have laser turrets bigger than an apartment block.

@onan plus even though you hear people say it’s the right time to buy or sell, somebody else already has and they’re not telling anyone

@onan Yes, full marks. It's rather like sitting down to a casino table to count cards. It'll work in the right casino, given time and discipline, but single mistakes can cost a lot, so you still have to go in understanding you might lose your stake. And the only ways to get ahead are to have perfect play for a long time or to ride a small statistical success and leave with some modest winnings. I generally just do the latter.

@onan One of the great robber barons (Rockefeller, perhaps?) is supposed to have said, "the secret to making money in stocks is to buy low, & sell before the top". I tend to assume that anyone promoting a particular issue is engaged in that second part.

@publius Good advice all around! The funny thing about the secrets of mind control is that they aren't secrets, they're just not spoken about in polite company. Here's the impolite company I keep...:jrbd: subgenius.com
