An update on my #homeserver adventures. I think the #lime2 is just too underpowered for what I want to do. So far I installed #Nextcloud and #Airsonic. Half of the 1GB of RAM is used up. Nextcloud web UI takes more than 30 seconds to load; Airsonic is worse, it constantly generates gateway time-outs.I've always hated waiting for a computer. Tomorrow I'll (hopefully) pick up a refurbished Lenovo Tiny desktop with 8GB of RAM. 😄That will free up the LIME2 for PieHole.

@normandc No matter how much RAM or CPU you throw at Nextcloud, it’ll still be slow. Maybe not that slow, but it’s not very snappy software.

@bsharitt @normandc this is sadly true. I have nextcloud running on 8i5 processor with 16GB RAM. It still feels slower than what a cloud provider would give.In the future, I'll make a ryzen build for nectcloud, see how that goes

@yarmo @bsharitt I don't expect it to be as snappy as a cloud service, but waiting 30 to 60 seconds is too much.I've revised my plan. I initally wanted to use Nextcloud to sync my Music and Pictures folders between my desktop and my phone. I now realize Syncthing is probably more suited. That'll put less of a load on Nextcloud I think (it won't access those folders).

@normandc @bsharitt music is a whole different beast!Nextcloud: I wouldn't!Syncthing: getting better! But perhaps I could up this one: airsonic. It's like having spotify with owned music. It can sync music, remove from phone, it can transcode to lower quality if you're using data, you can listen using a browser.Could this be a solution?

@normandc @bsharitt pictures:I sync photos taken on my phone directly to nextcloud. Nextcloud syncs to computer. But this could also be done using syncthing. What I like about nextcloud is that I get a cloud image viewer for free. If not needed, syncthing is just as solid.

@yarmo @bsharitt Our toots crossed. I already have Airsonic installed. I have gateway time-out issues with it. Plus the web UI is useless on a phone (I'm using #UbuntuTouch, I couldn't make the only two available apps work.In any case, I don't have a big data plan, I want the music in the phone's storage.

@yarmo @bsharitt But do you mean Airsonic can sync music files between the Airsonic server and other devices?

@yarmo @bsharitt My problem with Nextcloud is that it doesn't seem able to sync folders outside of the Nextcloud folder. And it doesn't work with symlinks!I do like the cloud image viewer.

@normandc @bsharitt as in, you can make music available "offline". It's not a real sync function to transfer files like syncthing, but it stores files on your phone at the press of a button so you can listen without using data.

@normandc @bsharitt external storage is the solution there, my friend. I have struggled with this a long time.I have setup sftp servers that point to my photo folders. Then in nextcloud, I login to those sftp servers and voila. Photo storage outside of the nextcloud folder

@yarmo @bsharitt But unless I choose first to store those file while online, they won't be available offline.I wonder if one can store _all_ the music files... I've got about 23GB currently. 🤔

@normandc yes, you first need to be online, press the button to make them available offline.23GB is quite a bit. The nice thing here is you can rotate: only sync certain albums. Every time you go online, delete local files and sync other albums. #suggestions

@normandc it took me a lot of research to fully understand external storage. Anything I can say to prevent you from wasting hours as well, just ask 😃

@normandc @yarmo @bsharitt my biggest gripe is the speed of onlyoffice or collabora. Everything else is bearable.

@karan @normandc @bsharitt true. Onlyoffice is out of the picture due to shenanigans, collabora is great albeit a bit slow.Euhm don't take this the wrong way 🙂 but you're not using Google Drive, @karan ? I've been meaning to ask you about google for some time

@yarmo @normandc @bsharitt I get the irony. :)I self host most of my infrastructure (except email) and try to keep my personal interests/beliefs away from work itself.
