I saw a billboard ad for #DuckDuckGo in my almost-middle-of-nowhere-town and I don't know how I feel about it. On one hand, more people using a more private search engine is good. On the other, DuckDuckGo is doing billboard ads :blobfrown:โ€‹

@amolith DuckDuckGo's whole business model is having non-intrusive ads so I think they still make a profit, but not with your data. And if you don't trust them anyway, there is a FOSS selfhosted search engine called searX.

@amolithI think it's kind of part of their image to do billboards. They actually did billboards from the very beginning.

@syster I have and I had an instance for a little while but I had never encountered such a heavy piece of software and had to stop. I do plan to set it up in the future once I have some more funding though

@syster I have and I had an instance for a little while but I've never encountered such a heavy piece of software and didn't have the resources I really needed to make hosting it worthwhile. I do plan to set it up in the future once I have some more funding though

@brian Nothing in particular, it just wasn't something I really expected from DuckDuckGo. I hadn't realised that actually did billboard advertising at the very beginning though
