wait are cooktops like this, with the controls behind the plates, common in america? this seems really inconvenient

@papush i came across a cooktop once where the controls were a bunch of magnetic sensors under the glass, with a magnet you could put on the control you want to operate and turn like a knobi think that's pretty cool, combines the convenience of knobs while being as easy to clean as sensor fields

@lis Compared to a watercloset design that maintains a pool of water ready to splash your butt when you drop a log, this stove looks like a very minor inconvenience.

@lis Oddly enough, my first house was built in 1983 in California and it had an old range with front-mounted controls and electro-mechanical clock (pictured). I can only conclude that rear-mounted controls were a result of cost-cutting and/or safety regulations.

are most americans just not aware of objectively better designs for things or?like, they use cooktops like this, they still use outdated vertical washing machines, they still use wildly unsafe mains outlets and plugs and getting shocked by them is apparently a really common experiencelikewhat the fuck?

@lis it's weird how countries just tend to settle on a style of how things are done with a appliances and then just stick to it, even if there are better alternatives all around. not exclusive to america, of course.

@lain @lis ok yeh, looking at variants from other places, i prefer a lot in the back like that. putting them in the front is in the way and for short people, and in among things is a good way to be burnt (grandmother had one like that)

@shmibs tbh the *knobs* getting a little dirty would be the least of my concerns with plates like thesebut yeah most standalone cooktops have their controls on the front, sometimes also on the side, cleaning these is fairly easycombinations with an oven usually have a vertical control panel between cooktop and oven

@tmy @lis Not buying it. Gas stoves still have the controls in front. Second, electric stoves all have electronic controls now and could easily implement a lock-out or pass-code function. Yet they keep placing them in the back. It's just so they don't have to run the cables over the hot area and save a buck or two.

> think of the children, they love to play with the knobs, this could be dangerouswell maybe you don't let your little kids play in the kitchen unsupervised thenat least not until they've learned that the stove is dangerousor just get an induction stove where the plates won't turn on unless there's cookware on them

@lis Now that I think about it, I think it's only used on electric stoves. Definitely didn't have them on the top when I lived in a place with a gas stove. It's probably a bit cheaper or easier to wire that way, and since it's electric, you're not going to have a flame burn your arm while adjusting the setting. Mine at least is raised a good 10 inches off the cooking surface so I don't think it's likely you'd burn yourself on the pot, unless you're like deep frying or something.
