I was considering the purchase of a cheap Asus Vivobook L402SA laptop. However, I've not found a single description online of using Linux with this Asus, not even an unsuccessful attempt. Anyone managed it?Alternatively, recommendations of similar spec/price machines that are fully Linux capable, would be useful.#Asus #Linux #FOSS #FLOSS

@yukiame @fitheach I've had a few asus netbook thingees running linux. the only problem I ever had with them was that your heart has to be weighed and if it balances with a feather you can move on to the install. Otherwise your soul is fed to a crocodile headed monster.

@fitheach I've never failed to install linux on a laptop (so far). My soon-to-end supply of new laptops results as each of my friend's kids graduates highschool and goes off to work or college. Only a few of them left in their respective nests now :-( The parade began about 8 years ago I think. My idea of an inexpensive lappy is a pine pro, but I don't have a personal use case for a laptop, so I don't know.

@fitheach An Archlinux user told me that Archlinux was the only Linux distribution to work with a specific Asus model. I remember it as the best (if not only) argument to run Archlinux as a Linux desktop user.I may give you his contact if you're interested. If this is _this_ model I'd recommend you to try OpenBSD or NetBSD instead, because using Archlinux is like building a house: it's only useful if you have plans before bringing the materials and the construction staff.

@penguin42 Storage space doesn't matter as I'm not intending this to be a general use laptop. I specifically want it as a laptop to take with me on photo trips. I would use it to check my photos, and keep a temporary backup. Once I'm back home the photos would go on to my home server, and I'd clear the space on this laptop

@gemlog @fitheach It's slow, the screen is so-so, but it's hilariously easy to service, it's light as hell, it charges on 5V so a USB-to-barrel cable means any battery pack can charge it, and the battery lasts forever. It's great for everything except the web, and it can even keep up with a lot there.

Now that I have made my decision, and the laptop purchase, I can hardly wait* to start configuring. This machine will be a bit different from usual, it will be mostly single purpose: a mobile photo store & analyser. For me, part of the fun of #FLOSS are the almost infinite choices you can make when creating your new working environment. Exciting times ahead.* I will have to wait, as the laptop won't arrive for a few days.

@gemlog @fitheach I had a Paris-to-SF flight where I programmed the whole flight in the Pinebook. Emacs and Racket and Firefox for local documentation was just fine.FF with uBlock works well enough on the machine: it has the power of a high-end workstation from the early 2000's after all. But modern webpages are often memory and CPU pigs. IME it's the on-site JS that kills things, not add-ons; by reducing crap, uBlock speeds thingd up significantly.

@gemlogPretty close to fair, yes. You need to be or have access to a geek to get it running in the first place. It's ideal for geeks who want light weight, battery life, super easy maintenance. But no need for lynx; modern web pages do work with it. Work gave me a dual-boot Red Hat / Win XP laptop in those days, and XP was preconfigured to look like the NT 6.0 that it really was.I was able to avoid Vista entirely, thankfully. Constant popups sounds miserable.Windows 7 was OK, but I was pretty annoyed that I was stuck with Windows, and Linux relegated to inside a VM.Windows 8 was when they lost their minds. Win 10 seems less crazy but still pretty insane. I'm glad I don't need to use it anymore.I just wish they'd let me boot directly into Fedora :(@gemlog

@fitheach no problem. UK keyboard is probably ISO layout the same used across Europe. US ASCII is probably somehow more comfortable bc. of left SHIFT and closer ENTER, on other side ENTER is bigger. That's not the issue. Will probably check market soon. Thinking of x200 or T400. Don't need yet, as I use desktop and not a big fan of notebooks. But that can change as I move often this time.

The keyboard keys are standard size, but the restricted available space means something had to be sacrificed. Lenovo chose to omit the "mouse" buttons below the trackpad. It will take me some time to adjust to this omission, as I am so used to those keys on the T530. Personally, I would have preferred that Lenovo omitted the upper keys, but hey ho.

One configuration issue is driving me nuts. I normally use wicd for choosing the network connection. However, it (or something it is invoking) knocks out the interface every 30 seconds. For the time being I've had to disable the wicd daemon, and instead use the ifup/ifdown method. This is OK for home use, but isn't feasible when selecting WiFi networks elsewhere. Strangely, I have an *almost* identical setup on the T530, and it works perfectly. This is the sort of problem that can waste hours.

@fitheach I only used it to shove the pointer around for focus-follows-mouse purposes, not for real mousing, which is why I have the same preference as you. But they made the obviously ThinkPad-correct choice, for better or worse.

@tfb Nipple is an entirely appropriate word. Just the same when you talk about grease nipples on cars.Stop smirking at the back.

@emacsomancer Is it possible to embrace a nipple? Aren't they usually a bit small for this kind of interaction?@tfb

@fitheach That is a Linux flavor I was unaware of... but if it works well on Lenovo then I might give it a go! I'll have a look around.I've got a Yoga 3 Pro with Mint+Xfce that is... mostly ok. But I'd really like something better, and wow 7 seconds sounds amazing!

@bouncinglime Three of the seven seconds are the default delay on the GRUB chooser screen. I could omit the three second delay. 😃 Xfce and Slim are lightweight, but the 8GB RAM and SSD drive are big factors in the fast boot time. Also, the Intel Core i3-3210M is no slouch for a small machine.

@fitheach I'd be curious to know why you chose Devuan. I'm vaguely aware of the init/systemd debate, but I honestly don't care either way - that's well out of my league, and much more than I want to have to think about when I open my computer to do work. I've been thinking about just going with basic Ubuntu, honestly, but am open to other opinions!

@fitheach @tfb Keep your finger on the nipple? But more seriously, try it out (it might need tuning to be more comfortable:- I made my nipple less sensitive). I ended up physically unplugging the trackpad on my x230.

@emacsomancer My first ThinkPad was a T42, followed by a T60, followed by a T510, followed by a T530, and now also a X230i. I think it is fair to say that if I haven't adjusted to using a nipple by now, it will never happen. I still love my ThinkPads.@tfb

@bouncinglime It was an idealogical motivation that lead me to Devuan. I don't like the idea of being forced to use only one init system, particularly not one that is attempting to take over the whole environment. Free software is about choice, I chose to go elsewhere. There were options to go to Arch or Gentoo based distros, but I wanted to stay with a Debian based distro. Devuan was the obvious choice. I also use Devuan on 15 servers.

@fitheach @tfb Ah, well. that's fair enough. (I feel the same about trackpads: I was happy when I finally 'discovered' thinkpads: I could finally use a laptop on my lap - rather than having to have a flat surface where I could plug in a mouse or trackball or whatever.)

@fitheachTrackballs on the right or below the keyboard or clip-on were standard for laptops through the mid-1990's. The first Apple laptops used them, and if a PC laptop had an integrated pointing device (far from a given) it was a trackball.@emacsomancer @mntmn

@fitheach @basil The idea is that you use one hand, with the thumb for the buttons, which is why they can't be too far away.
