What do you think about Cubbit? https://www.cubbit.io/

@mike67it if and only if it's totally FOSS, sounds great. Otherwise, garbage and should not be used 😄

@Matter @mike67it considering that my ABP is blocking Facebook, Cloudflare, and Google Analytics requests from Michele's website, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

@danuker @Matter I'm not an expert, sorry. I was just looking for a free, open source and non-centralized alternative to Dropbox. I think that the cloud is now indispensable, to secure our data and to be able to access them from anywhere and with any device. Is Freedombox the solution? I did not know it.

@mike67it @Matter As for not being an expert, it's not you who should apologize. I apologize for being so inhumanly brief! Here's a site I love that lets me search for free-software alternatives:https://alternativeto.net/software/dropbox/?license=opensource

@danuker @Matter I have now seen Freedombox, Nexcloud, Owncloud, Syncthing ... alternatives to Dropbox that I didn't know, or that I knew existed but had never used. However, if I have not misunderstood (help me), all of them require that you create your own server at your home. True?

@mike67it @danuker yes, that's the only way to truly control your data. Maybe in the future something like Filecoin or Sia can enable decentralized and redundant storage though... Who knows 😆

@Matter @danuker But then they are not a real alternative. The advantage of a cloud like Dropbox is not only to always have my data available, but also to make them safe, for example, from a fire in my house. I don't want to lose all my photos if lightning strikes my house. It has already happened to me!

@Matter @danuker Let's imagine a kind of decentralized cloud. I take my data, encrypt them, divide them into many parts and randomly store them on the hard drives of the other members of the community, and in return I agree to "host" in my hard drive the encrypted data of the other users. No central servers that can be hacked, no large companies that can access my data. I was looking for something like that, I ran into Cubbit. It seems to work just like that.

@mike67it @danuker the controller software seems centralized though, and the hardware isn't really yours since it runs proprietary software. This makes it useless imo, but if there were some way to make this decentralized, maybe with something like Sia or Filecoin (the only useful blockchain thing I've seen so far) of course it would be amazing. And you should really be doing backups in multiple places anyway, only one copy is no copy at all.

@Matter @danuker I agree with you, Matter. That's why I wrote about Cubbit here, because I was looking for a free and open source solution. And surely, you're right, we will need many copies of the data, to call them really safe. I think the GNU/Linux community should set itself the goal of developing something like this, but without forcing users to buy hardware, but only by using the empty part on each computer's hard drives. Something that works like the old Gnutella network, or Bit-Torrent.

@mike67it @MatterDecentralized? encrypt? divide? in return you agree to host? That sounds more like Freenet - https://freenetproject.org/ .But it's made for published websites, not personal backups, and you'd have to - never publish your site address,- learn how to prevent spiders from indexing you- and constantly access or reinsert your own content; because it is at risk of being forgotten otherwise. The only way to really control your data is to run your own server (and have backups).

@danuker @Matter Danuker says: "The only way to really control your data is to run your own server (and have backups)." ... and to prevent the loose of my data due to a fire, better if I have 2 backup instant copies, better if at least at 500 miles far from my home. Your solution is a solution, but it's not THE solution I was looking for.

@danuker @Matter But I thought ... if I had two friends who live far away from me, they could host a backup copy of my data on the empty part of their hard drives, and in exchange I could host backups of their data on the empty part of mine. Each of the three of us would thus have a cloud and a disaster recovery, but without big-companies and giga-factories. Only collaboration between friends. Why not?

@mike67it @danuker this is actually kind of what I do, I have a backup at my parents and I backup their stuff on my drive
