Exciting #Zimbra updates. The #opensource mailserver that we use finally comes with a new UI and a much simpler way to extend its functionality through zimlets.https://blog.zimbra.com/2020/04/zimbra-skillz-the-new-zimlet-framework/

@Gina that new UI looks really nice! I used to self-host a Zimbra server for my families email. It was too much work to admin myself though. This is making me want to play with it again. 😬

@DaD ah crap. Version 9 isn't opensource (yet?), only version 8.8 is. So no new UI for us 🙁 I hope they'll push the updates to the opensource version soon.

@kev yeah the UI update was really necessary. So far I'm impressed by Zimbra. The only downside is that we had to extend the server with 'Zextras', little modules for admin and back-up purposes. So now we're still bound to proprietary licenses. Also the proprietary exchange protocol for mobile clients sucks.

@Gina @kev used to love Zimbra (in the end it was overkill for my self-hosting needs). I never saw anything better in terms of calendar/mail groupware integration with phones etc (as well as harnessing its LDAP for other open source stuff) that wasn’t Exchange. I wonder if NextCloud is creeping up on that now, I know it does calendars pretty well.

“Starting with Zimbra 9, a binary version of Zimbra 9 will no longer be released to the community and will instead only be made available to Zimbra Network Edition customers. There are currently no plans to release the source code for Zimbra 9 to the community.”Welp, guess that's the end or #Zimbra being #FOSS / #opensource . Thanks for pointing it out, @tcit

@Gina @tcit hmm looking a bit deeper into this, seems like the core stays open https://blog.zimbra.com/2020/05/is-zimbra-open-source-yes-faqs-about-zimbra-ose-for-you/ but someone will need to pick up the packaging work for easy installs / upgrades from v9 onwards. Any good alternatives?
