Day 13 of the #100DaysToOffload Series:Today's version of the "smart home" is not a smart home, it's a dumb home. If we want a smart home, we have a lot of work to do.https://mikestone.me/its-not-a-smarthome

@mike Nice post! Some thoughts. There are a few other less mature, less feature complete voice assistant projects that I can't recall names of off the top of my head. Home assistant can accomplish a lot of "smart" home features that are private and work without the cloud. With the big caveat that it takes savvy tinkerers like us to really take advantage of it. As well as some careful research and consideration regarding what devices you buy to interface with it.

@mike Good post. Smart-home, smart-phone, smart-watch, smart-speaker etc seem mostly about data gathering. The focus clearly shifted from building actual useful products, to data gathering devices where the usefulness is just there to ensure people use it enough so it can get more data. And most of the product design these days isn't what is good for the user, its just based on what the previously gathered data told developers is most addictive/viral/attention-sapping.

@mike you should take a look at Home Assistant (https://home-assistant.io), you can run it on a raspberry pi and get rid of all your bridges that talk to their cloud 😊I’m open to talk about it if you want, I’ve been using it for nearly a couple of months now. Great FOSS 👌🏻I do agree though that it takes more effort than just plugging a Hue bridge but they’re really putting a lot of effort on the UI before releasing their 1.0.

@mike About smart plugs and lights, I recommend IKEA Tradfri to begin with. They’re not so well polished than others but they’re way cheaper and use Zigbee so you can use them without their bridge if you’re willing to tinker a bit (with Home Assistant for example).

@Crocmagnon Can you be a little bit more specific when you say, "not so well polished"? I tried LIFX, but it would literally just stop responding if I didn't power off at the switch. Pretty useless if it doesn't stay online.

@mike I've never had any issue with the Tradfri bulbs or sockets. Here's a quick comparison to explain the "not so well polished":Tradfri socket takes much more space than Hue's socket.Tradfri bulbs are not as bright and don't dim as low as Hue bulbs.Tradfri wall switches don't hold well on the wall.Their motion sensors don't let you access the brightness data, they just send a value indicating whether they consider there is enough light or not.

@mike I agree with other comments regarding #homeassistant as a good solution , everyday they are making the software more user friendly , so that it's almost at the point of plug and play. It's certainly the easiest solution to combine all these hardware devices from different manufacturers under one roof .With regards to hardware the forum on home assistant is the best place for direction on what works well and what doesn't .

@mike regarding "Smart House" the old Disney movie: I think you should watch it if you have time. it's not particularly relevant to smart homes, but it *is* an oddly profound story about AI.
