@mike I was introduced to emacs in the late 1980s. Until then I'd only used line editors, so there was no competition. And it stuck: the best text editor is the one you know best, so for me any post-install script has "yum install -y emacs" straight after "yum update"

@mike Vim is the first one I used. And I have tried emacs just because too many people love it. But I am stick to vim.

@mike This post was the first I had read of yours as I had just came across your write.as blog. I loved what I read and will definitely be following! It even was the impetus for joining Fosstodon. 😀 Regarding the post, I tried vim a long time ago and just couldn't get used to the editing modes. I also had similar issues with emacs. When I want to use a terminal editor I stick with good ole `nano`. For writing code I tend to use VS Code or Jetbrains products. To each their own!

@mike Well said, my first year of Comp Sci was similar (without the VAX) just a straight Debian server, and the choice of the same editors, even in 2018. Vim and now Neovim are so powerful and light. Such a fantastic piece of software

@mike I've used #VIM for a long time but right now I switched to #spacemacshttps://github.com/syl20bnr/spacemacs/I can recommend that. It's like having VIM with plenty of features the IDE editors gives you but without their restrictions. The community of spacemacs is pretty healthy and welcoming.
