Something weird is happening with my #filmmaking. I've been practicing so I could learn technical stuff: storytelling, filming, lighting, editing, settings, etc. Superfun. Now that I'm sort of ready to start my first videoproject, I notice myself becoming concerned with all of this Youtube fluff around it: β€œWho's going to watch this? What's going to be my thing? Niche videos or popular stuff? Vlogs or cinematographic? How consistent should my videos be?”It's sucking the fun out this hobby πŸ™

@Gina Do it for fun and if you don't expect to get any money from it then you can more easily view it as a hobby.Don't worry about the algorithm, which YouTube loves to change all the time. Focus on quality content and people (including your followers here) will watch.

@Gina something I usually tell myself is to not rely on the feedback from others, but rather do the things I want to do for the sake of the fun or learning effects of them... whatever you will come up with there will always be someone complaining or arguing against it.

@g yeah but that's the thing. If I were to think of followers on Mastodon, I'd focus in #FOSS content. But I'd also like to make videos about #bouldering, my passionate hate for #running, experience with depression, failed attempts at baking, etc. It's a bit all over the place.I'm trying to storyboard my first project now and it's hard to choose a topic and style with so many options.

@Gina That happens to me with podcasting. However, once I am talking with people and recording, I am happy. Process--the joy in art is the process. Take a few deep breaths and record what you like, for Gina.

@Gina 100% agree it's hard.Think about what videos you would want to watch. Then make them, in anyway you want. Some great channels have a variety of content, and if one video doesn't suit certain people then that's fine they can wait until the next video, or watch old ones, or watch other YouTubers. If your doing it as a hobby then you won't care about views or subscribers.Make the content you want to make, and/or the content you would want to watch.

@Gina In short, do whatever YOU want. That's it. If someone doesn't like that, it's their problem not yours.

@Gina You have to make one, then another one, then another ... and you will find your way. Or how the experts say, you will find your voice.Except when you have to do it to eat and pay rent in that case go to the popular stuff.

@Gina"who's going to watch this?"At first probably no-one but you. If you're doing it as a hobby, then that should be perfectly fine.If you're making them with the intent of making money and self-validation, then perhaps find a different hobby as especially the former takes a lot of effort and time, and luck. The latter is risky too, as YT has some really toxic folk, and the stress from it is likely to feed your anxiety and depression.Probably not what you want to hear, but worth considering

@Gina Hello Gina! Don't overthink it, just do it! If it's a hobby you're supposed to have fun and to do what you feel like and enjoy the trip. Forget about the outcome! It's all about enjoying the ride! If you enjoy the ride, many others will also enjoy it and have fun with you.

@Gina You answered your own question. Don't engage with the un-fun parts which are trying to commodify your pleasure. Do the thing as you want to do it, and ignore the rest.

@Gina This was similar to me when I started to write. Now I don't really care about these stuff. I even missed 2 months this year, because I wanted to focus on myself and not on my blog.So yeah, as hard as it is, we have to let go these things, otherwise it won't be a hobby, but a job.

@Gina Personally I like channels with a variety of content. If you are looking for a topic for your channel that can tie into what you yourself are about, then why not make it about the process of learning all this itself? You can put into practice what you've learned, share your experiences, discuss the pitfalls you've encountered, and by making some videos about bouldering, baking, your plants, etc, you can discuss how it's affecting your other hobbies.Depression likely fits in under pitfalls

@Gina You're experiencing launch nerves. In podcasting circles the mantra is "Just do it. You will suck but you will learn and get better!".Apply the same logic and get your stuff out there. There is content on YouTube with really bad video and crappy audio but it is there.Go add to the noise and good luck!

@Gina How about not uploading it to YouTube and instead search for a peertube instance which matches a specific category/community/theme? :)https://joinpeertube.org/instances#instances-listThis might also remove the pressure to compete against others on YouTube.(And you would support some open source project instead Google with your content)

@Gina What you're writing about is a indeed a pitfall. I made over 70 niche videos (mostly 3DCAD tutorials) and placed them on YouTube. In the beginning it was great, my channel became reasonably successful for such a niche but that eventually became a problem. I pushed myself to produce one video per month which took all the fun out of it.I decided to stop making videos unless I really want to (on PeerTube now) and concentrate on the fun stuff which is creating and DIY.

@Gina Echoing the sentiment of all the comments I've read so far :)Just do it for yourself.Lots of 'kids' think that making YT videos is an easy way to get rich and then those question get relevant (I guess). But then you're actually talking about WORK, not a hobby.

@Gina just start making videos and see where it goes. My channel evolved from a focus on emulators to now mostly foss content. But I'll produce a video about politics or a tv show every once in a while
