Day 04 of my #100DaysToOffload journey. Today is longer post about some research I've done into #DarkMode vs #LightMode.TL;DR - I'm now using light mode everywhere.https://kevq.uk/is-dark-mode-such-a-good-idea/

@kev I think I may need to join this little shindig. I have been looking for a reason to do some more light writing outside of my doctoral work.#100DaysToOffload

@kev Great post!My software has a dark mode that is mostly pitch black, but apparently that was still too light for one techbro. They even offered to pay for an even darker theme. It's staggering how far this dark mode hype goes

@kev I'm sure there are reasons to prefer one over the other, but imo application and website developers shouldn't decide it for me. Personal experiences differ, and I most definitely prefer dark mode, switching back to light literally makes me squint. So please everyone make your website and/or application support both light and a dark mode. Then users can decide for themselves.

@kev There's a lot of research out there. I have macular damage and dark mode does work better for me because I have particular sensitivity to brightness, but that's just my case. I think one of the studies showed older people found dark mode easier even if it didn't improve their results.

@kev Excellent read Kev! I have not been heavily set either way. My Write Freely sites are white based, but my OnePlus phone defaulted to dark mode, worth playing around with so e settings!

@kev interesting reading! From what I've heard, in low-light conditions dark mode can sometimes reduce eye strain, but in all other scenarios light mode is better for you.Personal preference is a different thing entirely of course, and I have my phone automatically turn on night light and flip to dark mode at sunset (and with it, all apps that respect the system preference), so I suppose I'm a weird outlier who uses both every day πŸ˜…

@mikebabb I actually do the same on my phone and tablet. I don't know whether is helps eye strain or not, but it certainly stops that sudden shock to the eye if you open your phone at night.

@kev very interesting post! Enjoyed reading this perspective especially after seeing so many arguing for dark mode. Very well done

@angristan my blog is light by default. It only displays dark mode if you have your OS set to use dark mode.

@kev yes, but that's exactly what bothers me, the macOS dark mode is very different from your dark mode :)

@angristan but still highly contrasted, and dark mode nonetheless, so I’m not sure what the issue is?
