       @chriswere you know what would significantly improve Silence? Some kind of federated network or blockchain that would register if both users are using Silence and automatically encrypt the messages. Signal does this, but switches to data messages instead of text messages 😔

       @chriswere @uoou a great idea, but I’m not convinced. In fact, I actually love the concept. However getting my wife to use it is a different matter.

       @swansinflight @chriswere @uoou Signal's reasons for giving up on SMS were sensible from the perspective of running a single global service.But for a business-to-employee perspective, it would be very interesting to be able to encrypt SMS, which often hold sensitive details about service monitoring, etc ...

       @swansinflight @chriswere @uoou In most regions, SIM cards are for end-users only; businesses sending messages need to do so over the Internet, and generally via aggregator companies (because it requires access to the SMS core equipment in a telco, they like to limit the number of players). "Application2SMS" is the general phrase used.

       @swansinflight @chriswere @uoou To complete the thought; this means that business sending an SMS message exposes the message content to a large number of service providers, before it gets to the user. The absolutely unavoidable one is the telco itself, subject to government pressures.Encrypting SMS is probably a very good thing :-) but of course doesn't remove the traffic analysis/location data problem.
