hidden beauty of all electron apps: all of them bloating appdata with their shitjust make your shit available in browser so the bloat all piles up in the same place at least

@shpuld uh, most apps bloat appdata either way. if they don't they bloat regedit or their own directory instead.

@hj when I check windirstat, all the top contenders in taking space in appdata are shit that use electron or incorporate chromium in some other way, steam taking up nice 400mb in appdata in addition to the steam directory because fuck youregistry will never get that full of garbage

@shpuld ok but since it's windows we're talking about, think of all the games that bundle d3d9_38.dll, dinput.dll and such with them.yeah on linux electron apps tend to bundle their own outdated leaky chromium too but in theory they could be made to use system library instead, like literally everything else.

@hj @shpuld there are various legitimate reasons to use older electron versions"version number go up" is a meme trend

@hj all the crap is in htmlcache dir, the appdata stuff seems to be mostly just for the browser ui, while games and all their crap go into the steam directories like they should.literally only things that take 100+ mb in appdata are software that use a browser UI, I don't think it's a coincidence

@fluffy @shpuld yeah, sure. There are reasons to be able to fucking chose version and/or update it. Electron apps tend to ship their own version and update it literally never, leaving security holes for months.

@shpuld ohlol i forgot that electon apps cache shit too. but they usually load one same page... unless they cache all images too...>steami'm talking about games in general, not just steam. It's one of the things different between windows and linux approach, where on windows app tend to bundle their dlls with them but on linux they try to keep using system ones. Both approaches suck in different ways. With windows it's just that each fucking app would have its own copy of same dll, while it could've been just one.but since it's not chromium libraries that occupy appdata i guess it's irrelevant.

@sampo @hj it's horrible, my appdata is 10gb AFTER cleaning up lots of temp stuff from os and main browserback when I built this pc having a 120gb SSD for the os made sense but now that software use appdata on the C drive instead of using space where the software is installed, it's not so great. now that I look closely there's bunch of other non-electron stuff there too that takes space, like yarn, microsoft's own stuff, AMD's cache etc

@hj electron apps also install directly into appdata without asking often, which is very much anti user. I don't know if it's the new microsoft way of doing things but I hate itI don't really care about having multiple copies of same dlls as long as they go into where I want them to go (like they always do). ensures that games have the exact right version of the libraries they need

@shpuld i guess they do that because installing into Program Files (x86) requires UAC and people don't like that. Never seen that however, haven't used an electron app on windows since like... 2017?

@hj @shpuld It is not as straightforward to port your code to a different version of electron as you appear to suggest here.

@fluffy @shpuld it's god damn web, and most of the time you don't even need native features either. Updating chromium version should be trivial but there's electron itself in the middle and nobody likes updatin' shit because updates tend to break shit, but chromium is important because security but nobody gives a shit

@hj @shpuld Often, if nobody gives a shit about things then perhaps they are not as important as we want them to be.There are many electron apps where security doesn't matter, for example a drawing art app, or a game. >it should be trivialit's not trivial. To give a specific example, Vue Devtools do not work in Electron 6, due to design changes in electron:https://github.com/vuejs/vue-devtools/issues/1044

@shpuld @sampo @hj They'll use Appdata on the C drive if you're lucky. They might use roaming or local appdata, or user appdataThey might use My Documents or My Games or My ApplicationsAnd if you've moved the location of My Documents to anything other than the C: drive they'll still use the C drive anyways, brute-forcing a folder thereOr they might use the default install folder regardless of the actual install folder, namely in C:/Program Files (x86 if unlucky)/Shittersoft/Awful Program/User DataI've had every single one of these scenarios happen to me thus far. It seems like the overwhelming majority of people don't actually have more than one storage device or partition.
