A very sad but also happy today. When I was going through a burnout phase in December I realized that I couldn't live another winter in the Netherlands. The constant rain and cold got into my bones. Seasonal depression aggravated my burnout. Every year it got worse. I've promised myself this year that I will leave as of September and won't return until April. I have to or it will kill me.

Initially I thought that I was going to do a roadtrip with Jazz, to see where we could live. Spain or Italy maybe. But Jazz doesn't really like the car. My 2nd thought was 'what am I going to live off once I get there?' Jazz deserves at least 4 walkies and 1 long walk a day. How am I going to combine that with a temporary or permanent move to a different country?

Then the burnout hit me. And it was hard. Really hard. To get out of bed every day and walk Jazz. The logistics of taking him to the office everyday. Scheduling his walks around meetings. Jazz was still living his best life, getting all the love, food and attention that he needed, but slowly it was taking its toll on me. A dog is like a child (but better), it needs a lot.

Now it's spring time and I'm at home, and it definitely got a lot easier. But I get anxious thinking about the winter that will be here in a few months. For my sake I have to leave this country. For Jazz's sake I have to find a solution for him to live a stable life full of love, attention, food and walks. So I've decided to rehome him.

@Gina I seem to recall you asking about places to move to that was warmer? (I remember it because one of the reasons I left Sweden was that). You intend to stay in Europe, correct?

The foundation that initially got Jazz out of Romania sifted through dozens of applications and found a really nice family in The Hague. The parents work from home, both kids are a bit older. They're educated, have had dogs before, they live close to the beach and they just overall seem great. They immediately fell in love with Jazz upon our first meeting (who wouldn't).

So yeah. This is hard. But it's the best for both of us. Jazz is such a sweet dog. He deserves a nice family that will give him the stability and love he deserves. And I need to find a place to live that won't make me depressed for 6 months a year. Sorry for the long thread, hope everyone has a good day.

@Gina thank you for sharing. You transported them to work? You are amazing dog-mom! This is a very hard but very mature move. I live north-middle Germany now and I it's the most southern place I lived yet those short winter days still get me real bad

@Gina Oh wow, I'm impressed by the measures you take for the sake of the dog. I'm sure he'll miss you very much.I hope you manage to find a way to conserve your sanity during the winter months, I must say I'd love to do something like that too.

@charlag yeah we would walk to a ferry and then get on the tram to work. Took him three days to get him on the ferry while he was fine with the tram from the first moment he stepped on.

@kev thanks. I'm really grateful for the experience. Knowing that Jazz was in his third week of staying in a Romanian shelter that euthanizes their dogs after a month, and now gets to live a happy life full of love, treats and attention made it all worth it.

@Gina If it helps, here's my story in which i found middle ground:I lived and worked all over the globe. From Amsterdam to Joburg, from Antwerp to Dublin to Chiang Mai. When me and my wife lived in a flat, in a city in The Netherlands we started looking abroad again. Canaries, Croatia, Thailand (near my dad), Iceland, Sweden. Almost bought a house in the last.1/2

@Gina 2/2Then it dawned on us: we need space, not a new country.A place to grow own veggies, keep bees, brew beer, chop wood, build stuff.A place in nature. Privacy. Village life.So we moved, within NL, outside the city, into nature. Ironically, many sucg places are cheap, bc 'krimpgebied'.Now weather is always good: storm, rain, mist, snow, sun: with space and nature, the winters are lovely, summers marvellous, autumn gorgeous and spring energetic and alive. Even in NL

@Gina Great write-up, sad to see you have troubles with winter. It's so strange, I moved to NL from Budapest. While the winters over there are a healthier mix of bright and cloudy than in NL, I found the temperatures here more to my liking (I also dose 10k IU vitamin D a day during winter, that keeps the depressions away I've come to realise). Hungarian winters are dry and cut to your bones WHILE the sun is shining in your face, puffy clouds reminding you of the heat you are losing with every breath. Not all days are like that, but it's a given. What got to me in a bad way in NL is the wind during winter. I got a cold early December. Got better, not fully recovered, but better. Started going places. Got hit again early January, I was sick for 2 months on and off (turns out there was also draft coming at me while I was working in front of a window). The sinusitis is still around some days, but it's almost completely gone. Now with the plague ravaging the lands, I've been mostly homestuck for 4 months. I need a bike so at least I can get to forests and the beach more conveniently. So far I've walked everywhere.
