Researching FREE #video #chat solutions for Family/Friends today (optimize for reasonably #secure, video/audio quality, usage ease). Top 3 for family and friend convos appears to be 1: if only 2 people use #Signal Messenger. Trusted, #E2E, cross-platform. 2: If >2 participants Apple #FaceTime. Trusted, E2E. Only available on #Apple products though. 3: #Zoom despite recent press. #Encrypted (not E2E), strong user experience, cross platform. Use a meeting password. Thoughts? Think Grandma.

@jeff I came close to including Jitsi but since the Jitsi Videobridge encrypts traffic passed to participants, but is not #E2E I didn’t think it outweighed Zooms existing market penetration bonus. Are there other #Jitsi benefits over #Zoom?

@hyperfocal you can self host it pretty easily if you need that level of security.

@hyperfocal @jeff Slight correction: Jitsi Meet IS E2E encrypted... provided you're only doing a 2-person conference.

@jeff I also found the #Jitsi limitation that requires use of the #Google #Chrome browser an added bit of complexity for users. But I really appreciate your reply and suggestion! I'll play with it some more.

@hyperfocal @jeff Jitsi isn't limited to Chrome, it just requires the user to have WebRTC enabled. Personally I'd recommend Nextcloud Talk or Jitsi (both FOSS, both can be self-hosted and both also have password feature). I'd recommend NOT using Zoom.

@syntax @hyperfocal multiparty e2e chat is one of those problems without a good solution that scales. at least that is what i understand.

@syntax @jeff #Jitsi video conferencing has advantages over #Zoom for sure. Open source, no data sales, no software download if used in a browser, encrypted #E2E for 2-party video chats. But similar to Zoom, not E2E encrypted for >2 participants. Seems deigned for “meet now”. If people tire of Zoom’s dodgy attention to #security, Jitsi seems to be the alternative for free consumer #video chats. You just need to trust the #8x8 company that funds and hosts the public platform. Thanks!

@hyperfocal @syntax it's not hard to set up your own instance of jitsi meet.
