Going to be checking in on he Decorah North eagle nest more often. The first egg showed first signs of hatching yesterday afternoon. Process takes about 24 hours or so before the baby emerges.Last year the North nest ended up with only 1 baby while the main nest had 2. This year the North nest has 2 eggs while the main nest has 3.Learned a lot about eagles last year from watching and from the moderators of the live-streams.If you have bored kids, they might be interested once the eggs hatch.

Right now the parents are taking turns sitting on the eggs &, unless you want to see how eagles sleep, it's kind of quiet.Once the babies hatch (expected in the next week or so), you can watch them grow up. They even go through an awkward stage where they look more like Godzilla than an eagle.North nest will be hatching first:https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/decorah-north-nest/Main nest laid eggs later:https://www.raptorresource.org/birdcams/decorah-eagles/The Raptor Resource site has lots of information as well as links to other birds of prey.

@JM Just thought it might help distract kids that are stuck at home while also educating them.Keep in mind though that some eggs may not hatch (1 last year). Also the diet is mostly fish (parents tear off small pieces to feed babies) but there occasionally are other questionable (for young kids) meal choices. The eagle parents bring home whatever they find in the neighborhood.

@JM Last year there were major issues with black flies by the time the young eagles were starting to figure out their wings & all 3 ended up falling out the nests before they could fly.All 3 were rescued (one had a broken leg) & were sent to raptor rescue place. Updates were still provided & the two eagles without injuries were able to complete their develop and fly away. The injured one had the leg set (it healed better than expected) but was in rehab quite a bit longer. Was finally released.

@Bunniesmommy Birds are an amazing intelligent species. I wonder why the term 'bird brain' was used to infer stupidity?

@Bunniesmommy @JM we have watched Eagles in one nest on the marshes for several years. So beautiful. Yesterday they were just flying.

@Bunniesmommy I was an eagle nest-cam addict for years. Watching their life cycle is wonderful. (My fave was in Southwest Florida, but they had a sad season this year, with only one egg hatching and the eaglet failing.)

@Jojoplumber The oldest egg is showing signs of the chick breaking through. Apparently it takes at least 24 hours for the chick to emerge. Their home page has a link explaining eagle eggs. The eggs were all laid days apart and they predict the first signs of hatch by previous ones. They even have countdown clocks to hatch.

@JM Jealousy?I find it interesting how duties are shared between the mother and father. And how, for the most part, feeding the young comes before themselves. Both parents have been taking turns sitting on the nests and carefully rolling the eggs so the chick inside doesn't stick to the egg. They are also quite fierce if another bird or a squirrel tries to get too close to the nest.

@Bunniesmommy @Jojoplumber Thank you! I’m going to keep watch too! Denver had a nesting pair of Peregrine falcons nesting on a downtown office building. They set up cameras & it was pure joy watching the nest, the hatchlings & finally the fledglings!
