"Plastics"Ben gets advice of a family friend..in this case the friends are the jet setting martini sons and daughters of the Greatest Generation who were born in the depression and came or age post WWII.

Here Ben provides a ride to o e of the wives...obviously the privilege of the characters is well established...as is Ben's anxiety of being around his "jet set" parents. Here is the original "milf"...but in this context...the older woman. She begins her seduction.

"Mrs. Robinson you are trying to seduce me."Ben realizes that yes, Mrs. Robinson is indeed seducing him. A shocking proposition for 1967 movie going sensibilities...but shows for the first time the unaddressed complexities of the modern woman at a time when society is on the cusp of a major upheaval.

I saw this movie for the first time in 1970...I recall the seduction scenes made quite an impression on me. I felt I wanted that power. The power Mrs. Robinson has. As for Ben he is finding that his entry into "adulting" is leaving him feel without control. The movie now gets creepy as he is literally held captive by a naked Mrs. Robinson I. Her daughter's room. Who Ben knows from childhood.

Oh the irony....Mr. Robinson providing Ben with advice to "have a fling" and that he should sew the wild oats while he can. Mr. Robinson had returned from golf and appears sweaty drunk. Mrs. Robinson hearing his speech is assured it confirms her affair will soon be a reality. Ann Bancroft is brilliant and is the future archetype for Animal House character, wife of Dean Wermer.

The film.takes an absurdly awkward turn with Ben's parents forcing him to try the gifted scuba gear. He uses the time to hide from the guests. I am reminded of Garden State and Largemans interactions with his father...both set a similar emotional tone and show us that the main character is indeed lost to fate.

And now..Ben takes a modicum of control and calls Mrs. Robinson...but is he reacting to urge and responding to Mrs. Robinson's proposition. He opens the door and Mrs Robinson pushes him into the affair easily.

The affair ensues and the weeks pass...on a side note the beers Be. Drank included Coors and Olympia. Both became widely available after the movie hit.

During this point two Simon and Garfunkel songs play that set the tone and vaulted the duo into super stardom and the technique used influenced movie makers for decades beyond particularly in the "coming of age" genre.

And the affair matures...they argue about him meeting her daughter. Ben feels shame. Ann Bancroft puts on her underwear and stockings again seducing Ben in the process. This intimate interaction was a first in American cinema.

He admits he is having an affair with a married woman. Again the viewer is giving a delicious tase of irony an Ben digs himself deeper into a hole that only leads to disaster.

At this point more Simon and Garfunkel. As a viewer I am rather disgusted with Ben. His decisons were impulsive and he was not mature and his actions caused significant damage. He continues down a delusional path that to our eyes appears creepy and stalky. For me this is where the movie falls apart for contemporary audiences.

TV buffa will recognize a familiar character. Here Norman Fell is the landlord of the boarding house Where Ben rents a room. He says he likes to know what his renters are up to. Fell went onto reprise the role as Mr. Roper the landlord in the hit sitcom Three's Company. The show that featured a man living with two women and the hilarity that would ensue in the swinging free love 70's.

And it gets creepier...dude who screwed your mom and room you out on one date then told you he was fucking you mom after busting into your room has now been stalking you at your school. Apparently this was okay in 1967.

Elaine's turnaround makes no sense to me. Ben asks her to marry him but it makes no sense. He is awful. She shows up and kisses him then leaves. Such bullshit. And he keeps stalking her. Clearly this end bit is not based on any reality. But some ad man's idea of how men can always be right and women must align to that....so...I end it here....

One last comment....the major story flaw is the failure to build a believable relationship between Ben and Elaine. Had they been childhood playmates...or teen crush it would have made sense but Mr. Robinson is right he is a degenerate and belongs behind bars for being a creepy stalker. But certainly Mrs. Robinson shares some of the blame for essentially raping Ben. The end Ben stops the wedding in dramatic fashion and he and Elaine catch a bus to the unknown.

@EvaSkeeva I haven't watched that movie since 2011. Were dramatic wedding interruptions considered to be a believable ending back then? They've always been gratitously cheesy to me.
