Plz boostThis is the surgical style-mask sewing pattern that has been recommended to me by *gasp* actual doctors! (or a person claiming to be one in a group, so grain of salt.) It is fussier than other patterns I have seen, but is also designed for durability, and has adequate space for a non-woven liner. This is my translation of the design. If you #sew, if you're a #sewist, please let me know if this makes sense. Pattern writing is still something I'm learning.https://drive.google.com/open?id=1BuL7g2PX3iiv8yCaLgYnD39mLIoj2Hg0

Questions I've been asked: The pleating is much fussier than the Deaconess pattern. Is this necessary?Answer: The Deaconess pattern nests its pleats, which means a non-woven filter will not fit as smoothly. It also only has one layer of pleat reinforcement - between basting, stitching, and top-stitching, this pattern has three.Since these are being built to be cleanable and re-useable, that isn't an irrelevant concern.

Like on the one hand I agree with you completely, pleating is a pain in my ass, but on the other hand, there is a non-zero chance I will just live-stream myself pleating shit in my basement tomorrow humming absent-mindedly.

@sashakovich I was going to print patterns for this one at work on Monday. No pleats, but still fitted.https://freesewing.org/designs/fu/Do you know anything about the difference in efficacy of the two designs? (I'll also do some research when I'm at a real computer.)

@bouncinglime as far as efficacy goes, no, and as best as I can tell no one does. It’s gonna be a matter of your strengths in sewing. I hate cutting curved things if I can help it, especially if I am doing them en masse. By comparison pleating is fussy, but that design does not require a nosepiece (although it is improved by it), while the Fu mask really requires one to stay in place. If there’s a garden or hydroponics store open near you, go buy a roll of garden wire to use.

@sashakovich oh! That's a very good point. I have an ancient spool of garden wire I can use up. But how will that withstand repeated washings?I guess I could make a little pocket so it could be removed/replaced.

@bouncinglime that is a very good question that I’m sure we’ll have some answers to about four weeks from now😂It is a very strange thing to try and balance making a reusable project without spending too much time on each one but also not wasting resources and… It goes on

@shellkr @sashakovich woah thanks for the info! I assumed it was "something is better than nothing" but I didn't realize it would be so much better!
