@fribbledom I wonder what it is about Switzerland and Denmark and Netherlands - they're small countries; so is it that they're just testing more and know how many they've got better?

@fribbledom One of the news bits on the tagesschau.de live blog said doctors are expecting intensive care capacity in Germany to reach its limit in the next few days. :(#COVID19

@fribbledom I wonder to what degree those numbers might be impacted by testing bias. I'm in Atlanta, US, and I'm basically being told not to get tested at all unless absolutely necessary, so I assume our per capita diagnosed cases massively underrepresent the actual number of cases.

@penguin42 @fribbledom I’m in the Netherlands. We’re actually testing less (only people actually in hospital and health workers) than some other countries…

@penguin42 @fribbledom I suspect a lot of it came out of wealthy circles that travel a lot (initially business and later from vacations). I have heard estimates that most of the early vectors into Norway were people who went skiing in South Tyrolia in Italy. I think it may be similar in other countries.

@penguin42 @fribbledom In the case of Switzerland, we have a lot of people from Italy working in Switzerland (the canton Ticino is Italian-speaking and pay is good). Generally speaking I think the Europeans were slow to react because in their hubris they somehow didn't think it could catch them. We have money. We have everything. You can't touch us. I remember a few weeks ago people laughed at the Italians and shook their head. But no more…

@kensanata @fribbledom @penguin42 In the case of Sweden, lots of people went to Austria and Italy on skiing vacation. I don't know how common that is in the other Scandinavian countries.Sweden doesn't do testing outside high-risk groups now, otherwise it'd probably be on the list.

@fribbledom I don't think Europe is in much more trouble than South America or Africa. Brasil in particular is looking mighty fucked. The main issue with Europe is having a very aged population, which is naturally gonna drive up mortality, but so far there has been decent institutional coordination.

@machado @fribbledom To quote the latest TWiV, in a pandemic situation no news is bad news. I think they said on an earlier episode that Africa has only two labs on the whole continent that can test for SARS-CoV-2.#twiv This Week in Virology http://microbe.tv/twiv

@clacke @kensanata @fribbledom Yeh the UK got a lot of people coming back from Skiing - there really should have shut a lot of borders quickly. Europe really doesn't seem to like shutting borders.

@penguin42 The problem is that even now citizens cannot be denied entry so you could keep foreigners out but if you need to keep your own infected citizens out, that is a much harder task. @clacke @fribbledom

@kensanata Sweden has only few hill ranges, and no peaks. That said skiing is possible inland, but since travelling is so affordable, people tend to fly rather than take a train up north I think. The infection started with the Sportlov season:https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sportlov#Sverige @clacke @fribbledom @penguin42

@ashwinvis @kensanata @fribbledom @penguin42 You can go for very enjoyable skiing, downhill and cross-country, in the mountains of Dalarna (e.g. Sälen), Jämtland (Åre) and a bunch of other places up north. Many people also go to Norway's Trysil, not too far from Sälen. But going to the Alps is higher status, and if you live south of Stockholm, which most people do, about as convenient.

@clacke @fribbledom Sub-saharan Africa has a very worrying lack of health infrastructure, but that's not a new problem. Between malaria, ebola, and hiv, shit the fan long ago.Best case scenario, the lack of transport infrastructure will slow down transmission outside major cities, and they'll only have to worry about everything else.

@kensanata @fribbledom @penguin42 You can still quarantine them. How strictly you can do it depends on your country's views on individual freedom vs public safety, and how smart your citizens are when you ask them to please not infect the nation or any other nation.Like the Swedish family that got bored after one week of quarantine (after Italy trip) and went on a second skiing holiday (to Austria).

@fribbledom Finland has 521 confirmed cases but officials have estimated the real count to be even 30 times higher.Depending on how tests are taken, all European countries could be on that list.
