@Debradelai The approval is due to “medical indication”. Health plans sometimes do not pay for treatment if the treatment is “off label”. The FDA has to approve the drug for certain indications. Remember also that availability is limited because malaria is not endemic in the United States so pharmacies don’t have a lot of it in stock.

Any time physicians are looking at a new indication for a particular drug, the FDA is going to want to determine its effectiveness in the clinical trial process. We dispensed up to 10,000 pills of this medication last year and I don't think a single patient used it for malaria. Doctors much prefer mefloquine for that diagnosis. This medication is cheap, widely available, and will be a great tool to combat the virus.
