@sir I think they'll try until they run out of money, and then the web will finally be reexamined/cut down.

@sir If they add just a few more features, they could still catch up with with google in terms of market share.

@sirGoogle has basically a monopoly now, meaning they'll get progressively worse from now on. They'll also start locking things down. Both will likely result in increased contributions (monetary or code) to Firefox and Mozilla has no shareholders, so they can survive even a big dump in short-term profitability. In other words, I doubt they'll close shop any time soon, even if the situation becomes more dire in coming years.

@sir They won't give up, but with both Rust and C++ in their codebase, eventually it's going to take so long to compile that W3C will have implemented a few hundred-thousand more specs by the time it finishes. Then they'll announce their new fork of Chromium, where they Rewrite It in Rust.

@sir limping, bleeding severly but somehow not entirely dead, but yeah describing it as being around is probably a bit generous

@sir Define "gives up".Until we find an alternative to the Web, I think a probable scenario will be the organization collapsing and the project taken up by someone outside US.Look at how FirefoxOS → KaiOS happened. It seemed completely doomed after Mozilla stopped working on it.

@nifker haven't tried it so can't tell for sure. What I know for fact is that ~25 years ago it was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread, but then everyone started using Linux as a "temporary" kernel for GNU system, while HURD hit some hurdles with their design (kinda overengineered, kinda Mach microkernel being unsuitable) and developement pretty much stopped.Maybe @sir will be able to give more accurate critique of HURD.

@wolf480pl @nifker that's about right. It has bad performance, it doesn't scale, it's bloated, etc. Basically exactly what you'd expect to happen if GNU made a kernel.
