There are people in a panic right now about COVID-19. While I agree it's wise to be careful, much of the hording I'm seeing right now is borderline insane. It does beg a question though:How useful is your computer if the Internet were to go away?I don't think that's going to happen any time soon, but I notice that almost everything I use has a networked component. If the Internet went away tomorrow, how useful would your computer be? How many apps do you have that would keep working?

@mike photo processing ones will be fine and thatโ€™s what I care about; geeqie, darktable etc. ...however folks using Adobe CC, yeah I dunno ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I was about to say car ecu tuning software also, but unfortunately thatโ€™s moving the same way ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

@mike Almost everything, except the browser. Most of my apps here are offline. It's not so far from happening though, internet had slowed down for me here since most people stay inside their homes, and massively use internet. Probably they're bored and use Netflix๐Ÿ˜€

@mike LibreOffice ftw! Write your worries away in Writer, keep track of your toiletpaper inventory in Calc, and show your family your cool presentation about the pros and cons of cannibalism in Impress. Also, if you're really bored you can draw shapes in Draw.

If we were to experience network apocalypse right now, my computer may start sending "You didn't update for a while" notification but other than Updates, Web browser, Telegram, Tootle (mastodon client) and Yandex Music I can't think of anything that wouldn't work.Given that stack exchange wouldn't be accessible, all my devices could be more useful better I would.@mike

@mike the thing I use my laptop for the most is offline anyway; I use it to display my music sheets during rehearsals and performing. How the music gets there *can* be done offline but I usually download the digital copy from my orchestra. Or I scan it in manually ๐Ÿ™‚

@mike If the internet went away I'd be almost positive it would be power next. That said, my computer in said nightmare scenario would probably be mostly for writing.I could in theory play video games but most of the stuff I have is on Steam (a liability I now have to fix I guess)

@Gina @mike Now you've mentioned LibreOffice, I'm kinda concerned that my Raspberry Pi would unironically end up being more useful than my Surface Pro in the apocalypse due to all the free offline software on it

@mike plenty useful. The area we'd be hit hardest is our music and TV, since we stream all of that right now. My games would mostly all still work. Not sure about the PS4, but we've got one of those NES Classic with 30 games on it. We've got paper books and hundreds of movies on DVDs.Programming would still work, getting help and documentation would suck obviously but it wouldn't be insurmountable. I'd have to print my timesheets instead of mailing them, etc.

@mike> If the Internet went away tomorrow, how useful would your computer be? How many apps do you have that would keep working?I'm pretty sure all of my desktop apps would keep working (well, I guess #discord would stop working, but it barely works now)*but* I'd really miss the information. Firefox would still work, and I'd still use it to read local html, but so much of my workflow is built around figuring things out with online resources

@mike I was thinking the same thing the other day. My computing habits would change drastically. Also, I agree about the freaking out about the virus. But, eh, better safe than sorry.

@mike I guess not being able to look at cat memes for a while would be way down on the list of our problems. Also, I'm a ham radio op, so to answer your question: qsstv would still work and be my source for cat memes.

@mike 1. nice segue from covid to no internet.2. the question about how useful your apps/computer would be without intrnet is such a Winblows kind of question...or any of those rolling release distros that need a first time go of getting all latest packages before first boot.

@mike If my Internet connection goes away it's likely because we've lost power. My computers would not be particularly useful without electricity.

@mike from what I use, there'd be :gimp: #GIMP but there won't be much point because I mainly use it for editing illustrations for my online mag's website ๐Ÿ˜–I guess there's also be โ–ถ๏ธ #Parole for movies and ๐ŸŽง #Erika with whatever podcasts I've had the foresight to keep downloaded. And :terminal: #Geany with projects for me to work on until I suddenly find the need to look up the docs ๐Ÿ”ŽOh, and then there's ๐Ÿ“ #Marktext, the markdown editor. Maybe I'll actually write something โœ๏ธ ๐Ÿ˜œ

@mike Do you mean just for a while? We occasionally go without the Net for a few weeks because of a natural disaster. But we usually don't have power either. If we had power but no Internet, it would be like the 80s and 90s again (but without television, probably).
