tbh vpns are a scam, to really regain privacy we need to design our software and protocols around it. add end-to-end encryption, message retention limits, client-to-server encryption (yes on top of e2ee), PFS everywhere, etc

@lumi vpns aren't a scam, calling a gateway you rent and pipe all your traffic over "a vpn" is a scam, and it annoys me.

@Dee true true, I was overly broad in what I said. vpns are great, just not in the way they're usually advertised

@khaosgrille shouldn't need to do that in the first place, as protocols should be as private as possible by default

@lumi ah, this pic is trash after all. All antivirus software does this, apart from maybe ClamAV.

@lumi vpns are a scam, https is enough. you only need a vpn to fake your location sometimes, and a friend can just install openvpn on their machine to let you use their location for locked content

@lumi I understood what you meant, and it's not your fault it's happening, but it is kind of an annoying thing to me, because when you search the web for how to do something with a VPN, you get a lot of results for services that let you rent a server. It's noise, because it has nothing to do with what I want to do, generally.

@Dee I'll need to change my wording either way, it's good to be accurate in what you mean, and I definitely wasn't accurate

@lumi yeah but stuff is continuosly invented by people who "make" things rather than make "good things". I mean there is a reason mastodon has more users than pleroma and twitter has more users than mastodon. I think people do not recognize privacy as a universal human right yet. i hope we will not learn the hard way.

@Stellar @lumi I wouldn't call it a scam, it's helpful for normies who don't want to deal with installing things. I do see what you mean though. Sometime i plan on getting a small computer or RPI and setting it up as a VPN so i can access my home network from school. I can't use OpenVPN though, it's totally blocked.

@khaosgrille @lumi the only issue then is to be secure to route via wg all the traffic, meaning dns and IPv6. Feasible, but you need to check carefully.

@loweel @lumi mhh yeah i thought it was no biggie (especially compared to some professional(=commercial) vpn i used way back in china) . but on the other hand i use vpn because i can not because i have to. noone is threatening me besides some nazis every few years and i feel pretty safe.
